Retired a little over a year ago.
I have always fished for bass but would like to start crappie fishing.
Open to all the advice I can get.
I fish out of a z118 with Ti2's and a Ghost.
Trying to shorten the learning curve for my grandson and myself.
All suggestions will be appreciated.

Get a good side/down image unit at the console as this is where you will no your homework searching for fish and or structure. At the bow get you a forward facing sonor system. Lowrance Active Target, Garmin Livescope, or Humminbird Mega Live and fish what you found at the console.

Livescope taught me more about fish behaviors in a year than I had learned in the last decade about crappie behavior. It makes me fish longer and harder because it gives you confidence to know that you are on the fish and just have to figure out how to trigger a bite.

If you live on a lake that has docks as the primary cover for crappie, side imaging will be the key to success. You can idle past docks at 5 mph and see whether or not there are any schools of crappie. If you do see a school, you will also no what part of the dock it is on. It helps you eliminate water so much faster than fishing them.

And if you just want to catch fish, always have minnows. I personally tie my own hair jigs, but there are some days when minnows will be the only ticket. Rarely have I seen it go the other way where they will not hit minnows, but will hit jigs.

Good luck, it's a fun deal and a lot more laid back than bass fishing for the most part. Certainly less technical, but having 2 12' rods a short distance from each other can make for some interesting tangles, lol.
