One reason I’m doing it is to get to k ow more about my moms side of the family. Her birth parents had like 9 kids and couldn’t afford them so her uncle (my grandpa) adopted my mom and her next sister that was just two years older. I’ve found out some just from using their names and using the family tree app they have on the site. my wife's family is from Puerto Rico . Since that Island is a mish mash of origins -- she decided to do it . She was surprised about her background --almost shocked . I did it this year and wasn't really surprised --- mostly European ---with lots of Irish , German and Swedish . There are a lot of locks you can put them on with how your DNA is shared . With that said , once you submit , they will bug you monthly to ask you permission to share your info --- I just said NO .

Sometimes you can kick over some rocks that are better left unturned. There have been a few stories here about folks finding relatives no one knew were there. Sometimes it went well, other times not so much. Wife's friend found out that her deceased dad was not really her dad - resulted in an interesting discussion with her mother. That was three months ago and she's still quite upset.

My mom, my sisters and I have done it. Confirmed most of what we knew, but did just recently get contacted by a 2nd cousin 1x removed of my mom's that nobody was aware of. He was apparently the product of an affair one of my mom's second cousins. That second cousin died in 1967 in a motorcycle accident in Arizona shortly after the birth of this man. The guy just wanted to know what happened. He said he's been lied to by his mom his entire life and isn't sure his mom is his actual birth mom since none of her relatives are showing up on his DNA.
The 3 months free is cool, but you can go down some rabbit holes. I have been able to find high school pictures of my grandmother and other relatives. I also have been able to confirm some African ancestry on my paternal grandmother's side, which is hilarious because she was a horrible, hateful racist. So I wish she was alive so I could laugh at her and tell her that she hated that which she is/was. Racists are freaking idiots. I'm so grateful my mom's side was not racist. It was cool to find a half-Caucasian half-Filipino cousin and a half-Caucasian half-Japanese cousin on my mom's side that nobody was aware of. A couple of my mom's uncles met some locals it would appear and got friendly.
I have just under 100,000 relatives that are genetically related to me that have shown up on Ancestry...it was more, but they have changed how they do things.

I found my biological mother who put me up for adoption. I thanked her for not killing me. I met my half brother in person and we would be great friends even without being brothers. Bio mom is from Ukraine and Bio dad from Russia HAHA. I [censored] you not!
BTW Bio dad is deceased.

A minister in the small town in Montana got a call from a young lady that said he was her dad. DNA said so. He and the wife didn't know. Perhaps I should have said ex-wife.

My sister did it. Not a lot of interesting stuff other than percentages on where our ancestors originated.
Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.
