Y'all know I love taking my grandkids fishing. When I first got Sandy Too, Jerry was 5 years old and he was my ride or die fishin buddy. (My first ride or die was my daughter Sam, now that she's grown I can't talk her into fishing near as much as when she was little). Anyway, Jer is 10 now and more interested in other things, like duck hunting! He still fishes with me now and then. Wyatt is still my go to but he is starting to be a fair weather guy. He is not a fan of being cold. He loves the outdoors, but the less clothes he has to wear the better. In the summer he would be in the pool 12 hours a day if we let him...
My grands that live out of state a love to fish with me when they come to visit too.
And that brings me to Sawyer. She is two. She turns three in February. She is an imp!
She is all about Poppy's boat. So yesterday was her turn. What a joy she is to have on the boat with me. She talks and talks. I love seeing them wake up to everything that is new. This time of year the birds are everywhere. She marveled at seeing them in huge flocks of more than a thousand birds as we motored down the lake. Full disclosure, I still do too. I love watching all this happen like we are a thousand miles from home when we are right in the middle of the metroplex.
But back to Sawyer... For Christmas I got her a set of winter gear. Boots, Bibs, a hoodie and a heavy jacket. All in "Pink Lemonade" If Wyatt is a summer sole Sawyer is winter. She is just like her mama in that regard. And in her strong will. She was going to take me fishing yesterday, not the other way around!
She insists on pulling the wagon from the truck through the marina to the boat.
The fish were chewing yesterday. Polar opposite of the day before. Even before the wind got up, they were hungry. We started the day with a triple and by lunch time when she decided she was hungry and we called it a day, we had 10 fish for 142 pounds. A pretty good day made perfect because of my fishing partner.
Sawyer got on the first fish and she doubled her PB from 5 pounds to 10 pounds. She is not quite three years old and she in into double digits! We tried on another better fish but she couldn't pull it off yet. So 10 pounds it is!
After that the breeze slowly started to come up, the boat was slowly rocking and it was time for a nap...
She let poppy have a turn too...
After se caught the first fish we caught 2 more before we could get him back in the water. When things finally calmed down, she looked at me and said, "let's catch another one" as soon as she said that, boom. Rod goes down. All I could do was laugh. But she continued to tell me how to do it.
She rode back to the marina up on her knees watching out the back of the boat, just taking in all in. What a way to close out the year...
