7'11" Heavy with a Revo Winch. Was a blast when the fish were schooling on Athens, but it will wear you out quick.

The A-Rig is a saltwater concept in a freshwater environment. I've seen them for sale at Academy. Read for a few hours about what it is and what the guy was thinking. Personally, it's a high maintenance and expensive, saltwater trolling rig.... Folks are throwing at big mouth.

With there being more simple ways of running multiple baits.

Growing up on the coast of Long Island we used umbrella rigs (the salt water version of an a rig) to troll for striped bass and blue fish. Also used wire line to get them down deeper.

7’6” heavy rod, 300 series reel, 20 lb flouro. I make my own A rigs and have for a few years. Use 1/8 oz jig heads with zoom swimming fluke jr on them. Use them on all the N Texas lakes with great success. Had a pretty good day with them Sunday on Grapevine.

Quervo Jones, the 7-6 swim bait rod should work just fine.

Do a lob cast with it using one hand at the reel and the other at the butt end of the rod. Push forward on the hand holding the reel and pull back on the hand holding the butt end of the reel. That gives you a plenty long cast with the A-rig.
No need to use your full body to make a cast. That will wear you out fishing it all day long.

No need for a 300 series reel, you're not casting it as far as you think.

How much does one of these weigh in at fully rigged, what lure weight range will a person need to buy as far as the rod goes?

Agree with others on the gear; longer rod and lower speed reel would be more effective and comfortable. The a-rig is just about required for winter on the highland Arkansas lakes I fish. Other lures still work but there needs to be an a-rig on the deck. I don't use it as much in water with clarity less than about 3ft, but it's still effective there if you're getting it closer to the target (bluff walls, over top of brush piles, livescoping). My standard jig heads are 1/8. Heavier for real deep work, but 1/8 does great all around. When you get snagged, do not jerk the rod or pull while away from the snag; you're just burying the hooks or wedged heads into the wood/rocks and it'll be lost. Troll right over the top of the snag, jig the rig up and down and more times than not the weight of the rig will work the little hooks out of the wood. If not, 50-65 lb braid will straighten most light to medium weight jighead hooks and you'll recover the rig pulling straight up. I strongly advise you invest in a 16-18 ft telescoping lure retriever. With practice and patience, it will become a very rare occasion that you lose a rig. Open jig heads are massively more effective with better action than weedless swimbait hooks. Only use the weedless swimbait hooks if you're deliberately using the rig in standing timber/wood/vegetation. I generally do better with 3-4 inch swimbaits (Keitechs are a great default to start with). Use more natural colors (pro blue for example) in sunny weather and clear water, more opaque colors (pearl for example) in darker water or cloudy weather

I would suggest one that is 7-6 or longer and goes to at least a 2oz lure weight rating.

I have thrown one A-rig in all my yrs.

spent about 15 min. rigging and tying it, used 1/4oz. heads with lft shad and all in had about 25.00 invested, threw it once in deep water on fork and never saw it again. hung up and had to break it off.

so much for my A-rig fishing. roflmao

Its more of a lob than a cast anyway, or you will see the twirl of tangle going through the air.

I’m still out on the water, but figured I would post a quick update. It’s not exactly a set your pants on fire kind of day, but my first experiment with a A-rig are successful. Thanks to all for your valuable suggestions and advice. [Linked Image]

Threw one all day yesterday on choke, same results as usual. Not a sniff.

I'll give five bucks to someone that can help me catch a damn fish on this thing.

I think your biggest problem was the lake you were on.

I’ve caught whites, striper and LM at canyon on A-rigs. I’m sure you could catch a few at Fayette as well.
