I always get a chuckle when someone says " oh so and so is the best jig fisherman or spinnerbait fisherman on the planet" I have seen certain Bassmaster analyst makes this claim during Elite series tournaments, and it makes me wonder, can you really measure that someone is the best at a certain technique in the world. Can you really claim Hackney is the jig God or KVD is the crankbait Elohim, and no one even touches them at a fishing technique. They may have success at a certain technique but to claim being the best is hard for me to believe based on tournament success. I think you can claim an angler is good at fishing a certain style bait or technique but to claim being the best seems like moldy baloney.

Can I claim to be the best to ever swing a 23 oz Vaughn framing hammer?

Not certain what your trying to quantify....

But certain guys get on "their" type of bite and they are tough to beat... KVD on a crankbait or a spinnerbait Denny on a flipping bite, etc,etc. This is acknowledged by their peers, don't know that it matters to any of us.

I think that its their confidence baits they use to get "he's the best" in the world. For me, fun fishing or club fishing I'm chucking my YM nonstop 365/24/7 and the guys in our club call me the topwater master. It comes down to sticking to what you know and how you (present) the bait. Thats just my two cents, I really don't know chit.

this is nothing more than "Bassmasters" creating an image, it's how they have made anglers household names... is Kevin a great angler sure - titles speak for themselves, is Hackney a master with a jig - that is obvious, but I believe they would agree that a lot of anglers out there have great mechanics as they do, they just have had the opportunity to showcase these skills in front of the camera and in tournament dollars... but to elevate them to mythical status is well just good "publicity" to sell magazines and video views, products, ect... I love both these guys and enjoy their content, but neither are gods...just say'n...

The one that gets me is when someone states that a specific rod (brand, length, and action) is the best one there is for a certain technique, hands down. Really???? Have you tried EVERY rod on the market to make sure the one you say is truly the best??? I don't think so. What works best is what you choose is best for you.

I used an UglyStik 6'0" medium heavy for a couple of decades. Vintage Mitchell reel. Nobody ever told me it's not what you're supposed to use. The fish never cared.

But after breaking down and spending the money. Most modern rods are amazing.

Occasionally I'll pull old faithful out and will remember the simpler days.

spending most of your time on one or two techniques can be a weakness . Really good fisherman can " find" fish better than others . . If the bite is off deep ledges in 12-15 ft , than KVD seems to win with crankbaits --- but if the bite is flipping thick weeds --he doesn't win . The really good ones seem to have 3 or 4 techniques they can depend on .

But Jimmy Houston IS the best spinnerbait fisherman out there

I don't know about other fiserman but I practice pitching sevral times a week and have been doing that for a couple of years and I still suck at it. I'm a lot better than when I started but about half my cast are going to wind up way to high, or not where I want it, or both.

I'm all about distance. Rivers and creeks would be my only application for that.

You cannot quantify it, but you know it when you see it. For example if Harold Allen or Larry Nixon is talking Texas Rigged worms, you can bet not only am I listening, I am taking notes and asking questions. There is a reality, they are the best day in and day out.

The best are so much more efficient and can cover so much more water so much faster than your average angler.

This in itself makes them more likely to catch a lot more fish.

In any activity if you are studied in the mental and intellectual side and ultra efficient and trained in the physical side, you'll prevail over most if not all at the same activity.

I just wish they would have a couple of tournys and tell these guys you cant fish shallower than 15 feet. No fishing docks or the bank. Then we see who can really find them. I get really tired of these "elite pros" fishing docks and banks. Anyone can throw a bait at the laydown or behind a dock. I'm an offshore guy. The only time I throw into 8 or 10 ft of water is during the spawn. The big girls will spawn out there in hi pressure lakes.

Really, they are "Elite?". Try this format and see who really can find them.
