Anyone built a shop recently? We’re buying a property near San Antonio and I’m going to start working on getting bids to build a 15x35 metal building with power for my boat. Trying to get a very rough cost/sf so I somewhat know what to expect.

Basic is cheap, it’s the extras that kill ya. Do you have a level pad already? How far away is power? Most building guys can quote basic buildings over the phone or have prices right on their website. Even number sizes are probably cheaper so look for a 16x36.

Double, if not triple the size of your shop. You won't regret it. 15x35 will be used up in a heartbeat. When I put up my 24 x 30 and got all my tools and equipment in there, I hardly had room to work on anything. Have no idea how I had all that squeezed into a 2 car garage.

Power is close and me and my dad are going to build the pad. Must haves are going to be a floor drain, power, and insulation.

I would go bigger if budget allows!! Dad and I put together a Muellers 24x30 shop with pad 12-15 yrs ago for about 8k. I welded up a 24x24 carport next to it and that metal was around 1.5k. No drains but have bunches of 110v outlets, (2) welder/air compressor 220v plugs, 2 walk doors, 1-16foot wide rollup door.

I just figured one for a family member I will build them, concrete and steel will be $22.00/sqft, my labor will be nothing for this, but figure another $7-$10 sqft for that.

I would highly recommended electric overhead door/doors. Windows are nice but can be an invitation for intruders.

That’s about what I’ve been figuring. Thanks!

Check local codes- a floor drain could require a licensed plumber, oil separator, etc. I have the thin foil back insulation in mine and it works pretty good in NE Oklahoma
