Be careful. T 'is the season for scamming.


FYI There is a PayPal scam out that actually comes from PayPal email so it looks legit. The "hackers" send a pay request to your PayPal but they put the following message in the notes.

"There is evidence that your PayPal account has been accessed unlawfully. $450.00 has been debited to your account for the E-Gift Card purchase. This transaction will appear in the automatically deducted amount on PayPal activity after 24 hours. If you suspect you did not make this transaction, immediately contact us at the toll-free number +1(888) 373-8721 Our Service Hours: (06:00 a. m. to 06:00 p. m. Pacific Time, Monday through Friday)"

The text in the note is trying to point you to a fake call center for support. The email comes from PayPal as it's a legit request. However the hackers want you to call their support number which is some call center in India. They will then try to tell you they need access to your computer to track down the breach and connect to their secure sever to issue your refund.

They ask you to go to https://www.teamviewer.com/ and install the remote desktop software so you can let them access your computer. ABOLUTLY DO NOT let anyone access your computer!

I fell for calling the number but went they kept insisting on accessing my computer I cussed them out and hung up. Then I re-read the email and figured out it was a message inside the request note they had placed. Not an actual PayPal warning. I called the real PayPal support and they are aware of the issue. I complained that they needed to be scanning for this and not allowing it to be submitted. They said they are working with the authorities on going after the perpetrators.

any time any place that has any of my info I put in sends me an email for any reason, I go open the site from my saved info so I am going to the real site.

if they have a problem with your account it will be in the msgs. and go from there.

my favorites are the ones telling me my wells fargo acct. is overdrawn or my citi acct. etc. I bank at a 2 branch local bank only lol

I forwarded it to phishing@paypal.com

If you ever get that type of email do not click on anything...don't even download the pictures.

-Go to your account (DO NOT USE EMAIL LIKNKS)
-Confirm whether you actually do owe anything
-Trash email or forward to the site phishing email.

IMO-Every business should have a phishing email so they can be informed if a scam is running on their company.

It was a real email from PayPal. The request shows up but with the "phishing" test in side the note from the requester. It's the phone number that is fake.

I am still amazed at the number of people that fall for things like this and I am in my mid 50's.

I don't disagree. However, this shows up in the PayPal app. When you click on the unfamiliar activity to see what it is then you see the note about suspicious activity and call the listed support number if you don't recognize it. Not to mention having a manned call center coordinating the hack.

I had this happen with another scam. I had to have the computer cleaned and swept. The viewer was still active in the settings. I was told they still could get into the computer. I took the computer to Bestbuy It took about ten minutes and no charge.

I had a thing lke this hit me a couple of months back and it nearly worked Pissed the guy off when I showed him up for what he was LOL

I'm an email administrator and the email you received was more than likely spoofed and not legit. We block millions of messages like this a month. In your case, where the email shows paypals email address in the from line, the message was actually sent from a different email address. Also, be aware of texts on a cell phone, they are even worse. My recommendation is if you want to verify if an email or text is legitimate, don't use the phone number in the email or text you received. Instead look up the phone number of PayPal and call them. Never respond to email or text if you have any concerns. Then the hackers know your email or phone number is legitimate and you will receive even more spoofed email/texts.
A phone call can be your best friend.

If you put your mouse over the sender in the from line, just hover over the sender and you will see some fake email address. It might shiw payoal, but when you hover iver it the real email will show and you can verify if it is fake or not. I get 5-10 of these a day. I wish all these sxcammers would meet untimely desths.

I don't disagree. However this was not an email scam. This is the screen shot from the PayPal app. They submitted a payment request and included the text. Then PayPal will also send an email notification with the request which includes the text from the scammers.

How many of you consistently win stuff everyday and need to confirm your info so it can be shipped to you? Most all of it supposedly from some one like Walmart, Amazon, etc. I was gettting two or three of those a day for while but it's kind of died down. The past few months I've seen enough of that [censored] to fill a small warehouse if it was actually legitimate. Phishing for credit card and debit card info I'm sure.
