9/9/2022: Today two groups of us took a shot at Cedar Creek Lake. I had Lenahorse Larry and Graham M in my boat and cliffshot went out with Chris M. Our goal was to find and catch as many white bass as we could and hopefully some hybrids to boot. We started at 9 AM and ended the day at 4 PM in my boat. Cliffshot and Chris stopped about 3:15 PM. They reported catching 100 whites then left to fish for crappie and got 25. We ended up with 160 whites, 2 legal hybrids (22.5 and 24 inches), 2 short hybrids, 6 cats, and one nice yellow bass. We caught almost all our fish on a #2 Mepps. Graham and I tried a #4 briefly and he caught a white bass or two and I caught the 24-inch hybrid. Then I tried a #1 briefly and caught three. The rest were on #2's.

We started at Spillway Hump, but it was much slower than usual. We caught a few but could see many more that refused to bite anything. We then fished the Rock Pile and got our white bass count up to 30. The best spot was at Enchanted Isle Ridge. We fished there for at least a couple of hours with cliffshot and Chris next to us and both boats pulling in the white bass. We left there with the white bass count at 90 and headed back south. We caught three at Merimac Point, several at Long Ridge, and about 20 at Pole dance Point. We finished at Saint Annes Point East, where we got into a big school down in 12 fow. We stopped still catching fish at 4 PM. To catch white bass I did a jerk start then reeled medium-slow speed about 4 cranks of the reel along the bottom with fish in view on the side-scan. Larry worked his #2 medium to medium fast without the jerk start and did well. Graham fought backlashes a lot but ended strong at Saint Annes Point using the jerk-start method.

Here are some pics of the trip:

I received this while at work yesterday . Biggest spotted sand bass of the day at 27 inches? Great outing!
Thanks for the invite!

9/16/2022: Went out from 10 am to 1 pm, caught 50 whites and a 24-inch hybrid, and came home. I fished two spots - Drew's Humps and Key Ranch Drop-off. I started with a #2 Mepps and the fish were very finicky. I could see plenty of fish on side-scan. Couldn't tell how they wanted it presented. So, I switched to a #1 Mepps, and they bit it readily. After catching about 6 in a row with the 1, I tried the 2 again exactly copying the presentation I was using with the 1 and started catching fish on the 2. Later, when things slowed down on the 2 with fish in sight on the side-scan, I switched back to the 1 and caught fish. So, I have a new plan for these finicky fish, I will start with the 1 to see how they want it presented, then switch to the 2. If I have to, I'll stay with the 1, but the 2 is heavier and easier to feel the blade turning. BTW, the hybrid was caught on a 1. The presentation is: after making a medium to long cast, keep the rod low to the water and to the side, then, with the lure on the bottom and a slight bit of slack in the line, jerk start it with your hand on the reel. Hold the rod steady where you ended the jerk and keep reeling at slow to medium speed 4 to 5 cranks of the reel. Repeat back to the boat. The jerk is sudden but short - maybe a foot or a foot and a half of rod tip motion. A very limber rod will not do this well. I use a 5 to 5 1/2 ft rod medium flex. My reel is a Lew's 7.5 to 1 or 8 to 1 gear ratio with almost a full spool of line..

A friend of mine and I were out this morning. We fished mid-lake hump, tennis court and the main lake sunken island just north of prairie creek. In each location we mark good concentrations of fish in 13 to 15 FOW. The problem was that they would not bite. I was throwing a #2 Mepps and he was throwing a #4 Mepps. If we trolled hell pets through the schools we caught some nice fish. I would pick up a few on the #2 but it was mostly a bust unless we trolled. I finally hit on something when we fished the sunken island. I found that after the initial start of the #2 mepps, if I real 4 to 5 times painfully slow, the fish would hit. I told my friend to do that and he started catching fish on a #4. I then threw my #4 rod and I continued to catch fish. The key was SLOOOOOOW retrieve. We caught 35.

9/20/2022: went out for a couple of hours to see if I could catch fish on a #4 Mepps - indicating the shad were getting larger. I did find one spot - Long Ridge - where I could catch white bass on most casts and also caught a 23 inch hybrid. I also tried Iron Wall Hump but no luck. These were deeper humps. Most fish were still on shallow structures and wanted #2.
