So I inherited my dad's 700 270. I gave it to him as a gift many years ago. What I didn't give him was the Leopold scope he put on it. I know the 742 isn't that good of a gun, but my dad gave it to me when I was 16, and I like it. Confident with it, and the 30.06 does its job. The Leopold fit nicely. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2022/09/full-100487-153807-20220917_182046_hdr.jpg)

Reminding you of your dad makes it a great gun

Nice. My dad and my Grandad (RIP) are both 742 guys. My grandad's 742 has some amazing custom engraving on it outlined in gold.

Who says a 742 isn’t a great gun? Expired many a deer with one.

Same. I've reloaded for it in years past. 168 grain bthp. Last year I hunted with the 270 and dropped a deer at 180. But then another ran and I found it the next day. I'm not confident with that gun. My dad wasn't either and preferred his 220 swift. Every deer I shot, except one, dropped.with the 30.06. So I'm going back. But with a lot nicer scope.

I’ve killed the most with a /06 but I also have a 7400 .243 that took plenty. It doesn’t leave a blood trail but insides look like grenade went off. Never had one to run far.

I killed my first buck with a Remington 742 in 30.06. Thanks for the memories

More dependable with a shorter case like a .308.

Man, that brings back memories. Grew up hunting a lease with the same 10 families over 20 years, I was about 5 when dad joined it. One of the guys was a farmer, and he would only get one or two weekends there. He’d throw us young kiddos in a truck and drive around and try and shoot some does. He had that REM auto 30.06. It was beat up to chit, both the stock and forearm were wrapped in duct tape. Great memories of him making one of young boys drive around the ranch and him slinging lead at does. Always wanted one.

I had one years ago. It was a BDL deluxe and I never had any issues with it.

Who says a 742 isn’t a great gun? Expired many a deer with one. I was thinking the same thing! Just don't like to get a hot barrel and the trigger group needs a tune. I've been looking for an old one in 243 for my grandbabies

I have a 742 243 that fires twice when you pull trigger. This was one of the reasons they were recalled I believe

I would love to find one in 243 for the kiddo. There is a lot of dead animals in my family from those old rifles.
