You might want to take this down to the OT section. Kattelyn is quite knowledgeable on this kind of outdoorsy plants/mushrooms.

It looks like a red cage fungus or stinkhorn. Did it have a bad odor?

Yes, Basket Stinkhorn. I read that it stinks like feces or dead and decaying animal 🤢.
