I'm taking my two boys up to Broken Bow next weekend. We are super new to fly fishing and trout fishing. We've been up there a couple times and only caught a handful.
Just curious about what hatch to expect so I can pick up or tie some flies before we head up.

Was there Friday and Saturday. We only fished Spillway Creek because water temperatures at Evening Hole bridge were higher than what I will trout fish. I only did euro with some hopper-dropper. The chubs wore us out. Didn’t land a brown this trip but caught several par mark rainbows with a couple 17”-19”. Stop at the fly shop and buy a couple of flies they recommend (if you can. I know everyone’s financial situation is different). Good luck and enjoy.

Not too difficult there. Midges, woolly buggers, nymphs, eggs, San Juan worms and basically anything else you want to throw.

Small rs2s in grey or olive (in 18s or 20s), size 16 or 18 frenchie type beadhead nymph (a pheasant tail but without bothering with legs or wingcase because they're so small), one in pheasant tail for dark, one more like a hare's ear for a light version, some with hot spots, some without. I swing the rs2's at the evening hole, sometimes with a generalized larger attractor pattern like a red butt, no weight. UsualIy it's the little rs2 that gets eaten. I fish the beadheads all over. They work great under an indicator. Lately on Spillway Creek I've been tightlining a 25 foot leader.

It actually went pretty good; handful of small fish and a larger fish for dinner on our last night.

We were up there this past weekend. The rain didn't bother the fish. We landed around 60 between the three, and lost quite a few more. They pretty much bit everything we threw at them: woolly buggers, cooper johns, rs2s, rabbits ear, and even caught a few on caddis and chubby dry flies. We spent 95% of the time in one area that wasn't crowded. It was pretty epic.

I've been trying to improve my trout skills up there and have been the last 3 weeks. Am moving from total skunks to catching 1 or 2. I caught a little brown trout yesterday which was cool. When I fish up in spillway creek all I can catch are little baby carp ( I think that's what thee are but I love the terrain up there. I tore my achilles up there a week ago.. Will be dec or Jan before I can go back . The few I have caught have eaten a small pheasant tail or a san juan worm. The little carp were fun to catch on stimulators.

Hiring guides the first few times you fly-fish is the fastest way to progress up the so-called learning curve, IMO. I usually hire guides when I go to a strange area where I want to do well with no problems. I plan to fish the Driftless in NE Iowa next year and probably use a guide to fish a certain special area. The BB Fly Shop guides are real solid.

I believe you're talking about "creek chubs".

Might I suggest the Deena? Did really well with them yesterday. Also caught a bunch on BWO dries. Major hatch coming off just about all day!

My buddy caught one about 18” in full spawning colors and kipe-jawed. Beautiful fish!

Thank you Split Cane Rod! I have a bunch of bwo's that I want to try on my new 3 weight.
Will stop by the fly shop and see if they have any of the Deenas.
