4x4 is a lot like insurance. You don’t always need it and may never need it, but if you are in a situation where you need it, it’s too late to go get it. There will always be a 4x4 in my driveway for those few times I need it. Plus, I think it makes a better looking truck.

The price difference is negligible and you will get more for it when you upgrade. I see no reason to own a 2WD truck but I use mine for alot more than just towing a boat.

I have a 4x4 and rarely used it when towing. A good set of AT tires and a locking diff will handle 99% of things that come your way.

I don't hunt and all the ramps at the lakes I go to are good, so I have never needed a 4X4 and I like the gas mileage savings over the years I have had by not having one.
All of my 2 wheel drive trucks come with a limited slip differential, I made sure of that. With an open differential you will have issues.

Some say you might need it for “the hill” at Squaw creek. Might!? As long as there's no rain and someone isn't in front of you slowing your momentum.

I have had 3 Tundra's since 07. First was 2 wheel, last two 4 wheel drive. Never needed 4 wheel on a ramp because I made sure I launched at a place I would NOT need it. Since 17, I have had 4WD and launch anywhere I want. It's a matter of convenience for me. If I have 2WD, I gotta drive further to launch.
Everything on your bass boat is broken......You just don't know it yet.

Never needed 4 wheel drive but there were a few times when it would have made pulling out easier and I might have had a time or two that I would have gone places I knew I could not go.
Its not a necessity IMO.

All of my 2 wheel drive trucks come with a limited slip differential, I made sure of that. With an open differential you will have issues. I made the mistake of not verifying the differential on my last Chevy truck (2001). I had problems pulling my boat up wet, slimy or very steep ramps. Had people tell me to lightly put the break on and it would engage the limited slip. I tried and then let them try, then we put people on the back bumper to get the truck to move. My lowly little 2 wheel drive 4Runner has more traction than that truck did.

This spring I backed my trailer onto the ramp at Highport Marina at Texoma to load my boat. My son drove the boat on the trailer and hooked it. The guy next to me was in a F150 STX and he was pulling his 21' boat out of the water and spinning the tires and couldn't move. He spun and spun and spun. I had never had that problem before. I chuckled to myself as I engaged my 4x4 and pulled my 21' boat right out of the water with no spins. He eventually got his out, but not without some embarrassment I'm sure.

A must? No I don’t think it’s a must have, but it’s a preference thing for me and I will always have 4x4.
