My dad and I had never fished Lake Eufaula, but couldn't pass up the opportunity to fish in the Sand Bass Extravaganza Tournament put on by the Eufaula Conservation & Fishing Association. Eufaula is a beautiful lake but it is huge (over 100,000 acres) so we e-scouted using Navionics and found some spots that looked good close to the marina since they had weigh-ins every 2 hours. We drove up on Saturday and fished from about 2pm to 8pm and found some big schools in 15 FOW on main lake flats. We would catch 10-20 and then move on to find another spot … the birds helped us locate a few schools. We caught several fish in the 15 inch range mainly using the MAL (chartreuse with either white blade or white on the body) and the Mepps #4 using the sawtooth retrieve. On tournament day, we caught over 100 fish on the flats and caught several 14-16 inch fish. There were 380 entrants in the tournament and they paid out over $26,000 among the top 10 places in each of 5 sessions and top 10 overall. Between me and my dad, at least one of us placed in the Top 10 in all 5 sessions (best finish was 2nd and we both placed in 3 of the sessions) and we had the 8th largest overall fish of the day at 1.88 lbs. The tournament winner was 2.14 lbs … we expected for someone to come in with a hybrid and win it, but that didn't happen. We had a great time learning a new lake and competing with the Okies!

Fantastic!
I wanted to go but couldn't get someone to go with me. I wished it hadn't been on Sunday but I would have made it work somehow. I wasn't sure where to get a hotel either that was close. I worry about security of my boat contents on hotel lots.

Thanks! It was a nice payday ... headed to Bass Pro Shops this week! We couldn't have done so well without the knowledge from Dennis and the MAL from Bob! Thanks to you both!!!

I liked the format because it gave lots of people a chance to win. Zack from Flamingo Fish & Marine did a great job sponsoring and running the tournament. Next year he is thinking about doing it again the 3rd week of July and making it a 2 day tournament with the same format so you could fish just Saturday or Sunday or both days and still have a chance to win some $$.

JWC: We stayed at the Eufaula Inn and it was 5 min from the marina and seemed pretty safe. We backed the boat right up to our door and plugged it in. The parking lot was well lit and there were some other boats there too.

Lincoln,

That performance was really outstanding. To go to a lake you've never fished before and go head-to-head with teams which call Eufaula their "home lake", and then put together winning catches is the mark of an excellent angler.

In all of your white bass fishing and high school bass pursuits, I hope you don't take your dad for granted. Unfortunately, there are plenty of young men out there your age who don't have a father looking out for their best interest and setting them up for success in life.

The two of you did very well!!

--Bob

Ok good to know. I will be there next year for sure. Sounded like a fun tournament from your report.

Lets make it happen, Lync. My boat at Tawakoni. I don't do well in this heat so short trips and trips had been late game decisions. Ill send an invite once the weather cool some. Let's aim for late September and October.

Also August is when the trollers will be out in force at Tawakoni cuz the bite is usually very finicky. This is when I/we need the mepps Master DC on my boat as well. roflmao
