Oh, was out in California recently visiting my dad. We went to the local grocery store - Safeway, which is an affiliate of Tom Thumb. They charged some 'mandatory' state or local tax on plastic bags. It wasn't significant, something like 7 cents per bag, but it just struck me as stupid.

They tried that two years ago in Dallas and Collin counties. A prominent judge must shop at Walmart because that only lasted about three months.

The discount you get is them not raising prices more than they have. Go to a Brookshires right now. A bag of Lay's potato chips that are $3.50 at Wal Mart is $6.19 there. That $6.00 a half gallon on Blue Bell at WM is $8.49 at Brookshires. I would prefer to shop at Brookshires but I am not paying 30-40% more for our groceries when there is a Wal Mart just a few Mike's up the road.
I don't mind self checkout. It's a pretty simple concept. It goes about as fast as if I had a checker doing it.

My day has never been made better by an interaction with a walmart employee, the less I have to deal with them the better off I am.

Be careful though, I read that they are charging more people with shoplifting due to errors at self-checkouts.

So no one’s business/employee on here has never instituted technology that cuts down on the use of employees.
Based on multiple Luddite attitudes on here no one must ever orders anything on line just using job eliminating computers.

I self check out at lowes/depot, we do sometimes at the grocery store as long as I’m with the little lady. If I self at the grocery store alone I inevitably mess up and have to have the attendant fix it roflmao

Self check-out is great if you want to steal a pack of diapers. I've seen it several times in the past couple of years. The attendants don't care, they're just there to clear the machines when something messes up. Walk into the self check-out area carrying a pack of diapers, go to a machine, stand there for 10 seconds, turn around and walk out.

Only time I have needed the cashier is when I buy a gift card...and I've started ordering those online and having them delivered. I love the self-checkout and have used them for over a decade. The Albertson's in Cleburne had them around 2008 and I definitely prefer to checkout my own stuff. I'm faster and I know it'll be bagged correctly.
