Hey guys I'm planning a trip to Amistad but have heard the water is extremely low and the fishing has declined on the whole. I'm driving from the west coast and will be fishing out of a kayak. I'm wondering if Amistad is worth fishing or if I should spend the extra time and drive to Lake Fork or some of the other east Texas lakes? I'm not looking for secrets just some general advice about Texas fishing. I will be in Texas late August early September.
Thanks in advance,
Matt

Amistad is long past it’s prime.

It’s fishing decent, not sure it’s worth driving from the west coast decent though. If you can launch your kayak at the Pecos High bridge, that would be my first choice. Maybe one of the Amistad regulars will chime in about kayaks at the high bridge.

Might check this old information out and do some research in it. With the water level it might not work but sounds like fun if it will.

Go to OH Ivie instead. Better chance to catch bigger fish.

Wait til it cools down a bit then come fish Texas.. It can get tough this time of year (for you and the fish)

If you're coming from California, Amistad is gonna be pretty similar to what you're doing back home.. If you want the real Texas bass experience, go to Fork or Sam Rayburn

Fishing is decent right now, just have to find grass; which might be tough on kayak. Best grass is on the Mexico side and I'm not sure I would want to be in a kayak over there. If it were me, I would head to Ivie. Good luck.

To be honest with you Amistad just isn’t a great kayak lake. Sometimes we have to cover miles before we come across fish of any size and that is rarely close to the few places you can launch a kayak. Right now you would be really limited.

Yeah I don’t know if you’ll be able to catch a fish during that time. Right now the lake is fishing decent but I think it’s because the dropping water level is preventing them from staying in the grass. There is some grass in 8-10ft of water but it hasn’t been growing well the last week or two. If it dies who knows where the fish will go. The water is also super murky compared to what it usually is.
