Been sitting around the house dreaming about doing a little wade fishing at the coast and my wife told me to just go. Then I thought I’d just take the boat with me, hit choke canyon in the morning, then head to port A and wade fish all day Saturday. So I’m off!

My question, any advice on choke right now? My plan is just to throw big worms but if y’all have other recommendations let me know. I’ve been on the lake one time, two summers ago.

According to a guide down there top water is good. Last time I was there about 3 weeks ago fishing was less than stellar but we caught a few punching and out deep. Just go to the dam like everyone else and camp out on the community holes if you are only there for a day.

I plan to fish all day tomorrow, all day Saturday, and morning Sunday. It’ll be fun.

Only 5 hour drive today.

If you’re launching out of South Shore, do like Minner suggested and head for the dam. If launching in Calliham, just fish around there. I’ve been wanting to fish up at 99, but never have the time to run up there.

Do you know if the state park closed the gate at night? I’m completely winging this thing so have no where lined up to stay. I have a SP pass so was kind of hoping to just roll in there tonight and launch there in the morning.

Yes gate closes at 10pm, you might want to call Calliham as they have campsites
Hours (6am-10pm) (361) 786-3868 but generally are full
South Shore is for day use only (6am – 10 pm)

Debra cool

I would not do that, there’s a TXB (Valero) gas station on HWY 72, across from the refinery, you’d be better off there.

Not much room to park in front of the gate. If you’re going to drive all the way to Calliham, there is a shut down gas station that you could park at and not be in the way.

Buds bait and tackle (the one on Hwy72, not the old one in town) is also shut down, you could prob park there and not get run off.

That is a little far south to be sleeping in your car on a road. I have a friend in Live Oak county that has been having a hard time with the illegals. Lots of break ins and theft.

Retirement best job ever.

Found a good spot and now going to sleep on the deck of my boat. It’s so nice out!
