Electricity deregulation in Texas happened, I believe, in 1999. So I guess “eventually” finally came true.

We got our first $400 plus electric bill one month after having to renew at 14 something cents. I only had contracted every two years - I wasn't smart enough two years ago to submit to a long term contract.

However, I did sign into a 5 yr contract this time. So I would look for rates to dramatically decrease next year based on my luck.

Yeah, I would not sign anything that extends past an election cycle. I had to renew at $0.19/kwh, what a screwing. I did find a plan that had low cancellation fees.

Yeah. We know why the price is increasing. Inflation is at 8.6 and rising. Gas is higher than it has been in 40 years. Well, well, well. That is what we said would happen with Resident biden and his clown show in charge.

I'm at 16 cents for the next 6 months. Could be worse later.

Looks like we literally doubled our usage this last month, so our bill is $342.55 this month. I mean, I did start using a small above ground pool for exercise, but there ain't no way that pump is using 1250 kwh/mo being on 6 hours a day. Ridiculous.

That usage equates to a 6.75 hp motor. I would seriously doubt there would be a need for that size motor on a pool.
More than likely it's a combination of your pump and the a/c running longer as it gets hotter.

I proactively just replaced my HVAC system because of these higher prices. My unit was 20+ years old and 8 SEER. But it ran and was doing the job... if not laboring to do so.

With the increase in prices it finally made sense to stop repairing it (Shout out to JonS for helping me keep it running the last 10 years) and just replace it all and put in a new much more efficient unit. I would rather take one big punch then get worked up about the size of the power bill every month. The American Standard 16 SEER set up with the two stage fans and an app to control the temps in the house from anywhere is a huge upgrade from what I had. It will pay for itself quickly at these rates and if rates continue to climb that ROI continues to increase.

Lot of little things you can do to help minimize the impact of these price hikes without going full bore new HVAC unit. Check your filters, keep your unit tuned up, fans, blinds, caulking, windows, landscape to create shade etc. etc. You heard them all before.
