When you buy stuff like that, take a picture of it and then take a picture of the serial number. Bicycle, kayak, lawnmower. New or used. Take a picture.

I always had all that info on my guns. But never took it seriously about items like mentioned. Also kind of thought it was on all the paper work I got on the bike... so never made it a priority but should have.

I thought wrong. Will likely happen again.

I can remember as a kid going to the fire station with a new bicycle and they etched a number on it. Always thought that was cool. Really sorry some POS took you bike..

I am more bummed though to be reminded that there are so many folks out there like this... who lean into doing things the wrong way. They jade those who struggle to retain trust and goodwill toward his fellow man on face value. Because that is how they would like to be treated themselves.

I drive a school bus for Denton ISD and I have seen numerous times where 2 "homeless" guys are riding a nice looking bike in a neighborhood. They are casing the area for bikes. A few mins later, after loading students for the afternoon route, I see the same bikers who now have a a 3rd mountain bike guiding it down the street holding the handle bars. The "homeless" in Denton are now mostly mobile with good looking bikes. Your bike will not be ditched and you might try major intersections to see where they park their rides.

I'd check Craig's list for bike ads, plus where ever else they sell things on the internet. Cruise around and maybe you'll spot someone riding the bike. If the pawn shop owners are men, hire some hot babe, dressed in skimpy attire and get her ask the shop owners about bikes. Chances are they'd spill the beans if they had any.
