Im taking the family to Corpus on Sunday. It's my first time going there. I am staying real close to the USS Lexington. Is there a public fishing pier close to it? And I was looking at going fishing one day w/ Deep See Headquaters in Freeport. Its one of those $40-50, 5 hour trips that holds like 75 people. Have any of you used them? And/Or is there a better one simular to it in Corpus.
Thanks,
Derek

Unless you are just set on Corpus, I'd recommend taking the family the extra 40 minutes and spend your vacation in Port A. The beaches are 10 times cleaner and better than Corpus. The Best Western is walking distance from the beach, and runs around $140/night, and the Comfort Suites is really nice @ around $125 or so. Don't stay in the Allister Inn, it's a dump. I've been on the 12 hour trips with Deep Sea Headquarters, their not too bad. The biggest problem I see right now with the party boats like that is that the limits for Red Snapper is 2 fish per fisherman, and those charters are mainly setup for catching Red Snappers. They aren't too good at setting you on a variety of fish. I just come back from spending 10 days in Port A, and Galveston. We were scheduled for a private charter on July 2nd, but it got cancelled, and the fishing pier in Port A was too crowded with 4th of july vacationers, so we moved up the coast to Galveston where they had more piers. In Galveston we went out on a Shark Fishing Charter, and then finished the trip off with a party boat trip. The 12 hr party boat trip wasn't too bad, my son caught the first Red Drum (had to throw it back because it was federal waters) I've seen, and we of course caught our limit of Red Snapper, and a few Angel Fish, but the fillets that we brought home wasn't worth the $140 for the two of us on the trip or even worth riding the roller coaster ride out to fish. You can check out my blog too read about the various days of fishing, and see pictures of our catch: http://myblog.michialthompson.com

Everyone has been telling me I should have stayed in Port A. I wish they would have told me that before I payed for it. But, there is always next year. Anyway. Do you think I could tie some crab traps up to the pier there and be ok. Crabs not getting stolen, ect...

Hey, I used to live in Corpus, it's not so bad... Rockport is nice, probably nicer than Port A, check that out next time. It's a short, pretty drive up the coast from Corpus too, so you might take the family there for some nice beaches. You'll have plenty to do in Corpus though.
I don't know about those crab traps, most people on the coast are pretty honest about not stealing crabs, but Corpus is a big city with all sorts of people so I wouldn't count on the crab or your traps not being stolen. A safer bet would be to place those traps somewhere less crowded anywhere else on the bay. It's been a while since I was all the down to Corpus, otherwise I would tell you some good spots. Stop by a fishing shop, they'll point you in the right direction.
I don't know about Deep Sea Headquarters, as a guide myself I never had a use for that sort of trip... just check it out when you get there and if you don't like what you see there are plenty more fishing services to choose from. If you're taking the family, it's an easy, affordable way to go.
Have fun! Wish I was going too!

For your deep sea fishing you should use this boat below. The reason is because they are one of the few who allow you to bring your own cooler.(save you a little money on drinks and food.) They are friendly too. I have been on their boat 3 times and plan on going again this august. The website will have all the info you need. The 3 times we went we took the 8 hour trip. You will get about 5 hours of fishing and 3 hours of traveling to and from fishing destination. We caught fish everytime too. Good Luck http://www.portaransasadventures.com/

I'll second what deepsea said. I've been on that boat too. It was great. Caught a 6 1/2' shark a few years ago. Just got back a couple of weeks ago from Port A but didn't go out on the boat this year. Fished the surf and drank lots of beer instead. Man I love Port A!!!
