I’m considering getting a 250 gallon plastic tote (the one stored inside a metal cage) and keeping about 150 gallons of gas for up to 3 months at a time. I’m doing this for hurricane season. Last year I burned about 10 gallons of gas per day for the 15 days that we were out of power. I’d like to hear what y’all’s thoughts are about going this way. Figured I’d get a 12 volt pump to get the gas out. Will I need to vent it? I’m also planning on storing it under a lean-to drop shed that has a concrete floor. At the end of the 3 months I plan on using that gas and refilling the tote.

I would want something more sturdy for that application

Above ground gravity flow fuel tanks aren't that expensive. Especially used ones. Do it right and get something that's rated for gas and there won't be any worries..

If you go that route, make sure you get the ones that are rated for fuel storage. Many are the type of plastic that is only good for water storage.

I keep fuel for up to 4-5 months sometimes, I use 6 gal. jugs with ethanol stuff to keep it usable. side by sides, mower etc. if you can get by with 100gal. tractor supply/atwoods have 100 gal. square fuel tanks, add the type pump you want and you are good. I take our diesel tank in on a 10' trailer to fill, stored on a pallet so I can move it.

personally, I would not use one of the bins like you have, heat expansion could be a true beetch of major proportion. just sayin. jmo


scratch that, nothing I could find in a quick search was gas approved. I still would not use a storage bin.

Safety and thieves would be my biggest concern. The drill holes in car tanks to get 2 or 3 gallons. Big bucks to fix. 5 gallons and let 100 run out on the ground.

man thats a tuff spot to be in... if I had to go that route I would ( if able ) switch that generator over to LP and get a good size LP unit... it's cheaper than gasoline and a lot safer to store... good luck !

I keep 60 gallons in 5 gallon cans. Use treatment like Hopalong does. Another tip, have everything full of fuel AND I fill my boat as it has a 52 gallon tank. What we did with Rita when we were out for right at 3 weeks we'd go out of the affected area on a supply trip to stock up as needed.

Use ethanol-free gas if possible. It will keep much better and you’ll have less issues with condensation.

What if the Hurricane takes it out?

Would a Mack tank work? There are a couple new ones here on Craiglist for cheap that are 118 to 139 gallons that are $200-250.
They are rated for diesel so I would think it would store gasoline even if it was rated to do so.

I would also get some of the 5 gallon racing tanks and then use and replace gasoline so you could keep what you have in the tank reasonably fresh.

How you gonna fill the 150ga? 30 5ga trips?

I can move it around with my tractors front end loader. Put it on my trailer to go fill it. The first week is typically the worst for finding gas close . After that,the stores around here are opening back up. I can always lock it up in the barn.
