My Haynie is rated unlimited, currently has a 250 proxs (I bought the boat used, and this is the original engine). Once the 250 grenades itself, I’m gonna put a Merc 400R racing motor on it. Mainly because 250 isn’t enough for me. And because I can. Trim it high let it fly

I don’t concern myself with what size engine someone else has-

HOW you react to what happens to you DOES!

My old 18.5' Nitro came with a Merc 150 on it new but was rated for 185. It does pretty good with the 150 but would be really great with a 175 or 185 on it... but I can not seem to hurt the old Black Max. My Triton does great with the 225 Opti , boat rated at 225, but I am always a bit envious of the newer models of the same boat being rated at 250....

I've had my fun during the days when I would run down the lake doing 80+ with my hair on fire. Now I'm good with mid 40's. I'm maxed out on my Mako 19 CPX with a 150 Merc 4 stroke. I'm loving life in the slow lane.

I bet BearTrap has an opinion on this. Seems to me he has traveled across more water than most of us could dream of, in a little tin boat with a kicker. Not sure I would call it underpowered, but I bet his boat would have taken more HP than what he ran.

I saw a 20 ft Champ with a 150 on it this last week. I'm sure there was a story. The older 201 Champs would do 60+ with a 150.
Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it !

Hop, here’s your Champion. Could be Pat Goff in that picture, not sure. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2022/06/full-4123-143902-a45c4b1c_5ae5_47ae_bb52_c14d1505a26c.jpeg)

Hop, here’s your Champion. Could be Pat Goff in that picture, not sure. That's awesome. You know what sounds better than one 2-stroke Mercury? Two 2-stroke mercuries screaming at max RPM's.

well most of the time there isn’t enough weigh difference between a 250 and 150 to justify the difference. The main reason for small motors is prices. You take a 20' boat rated for a 250 and put a 150 on it I doubt it raises up in the water more than a 1". You go to a big bay boat like a 24' I doubt it changes the draft at all. I think most are only 12" already.

Hop, here’s your Champion. Could be Pat Goff in that picture, not sure. not pat, he commented one time on who it is but I forget who. I toyed with converting the 184 to an in/out with a 3.7 ecoboost, still a 6cyl. but capable of 600 hp. then I figured out what it would have cost, so much for that plan.
