My mom could not swim even though her dad had a place and boat on the channel between Fox Lake and Long Lake north of Chicago. She made me take private swimming lessons at 5 years old at a scuba club in a 13' deep pool. When we moved to Texas I took all the Red Cross classes through Jr. Lifesaving along with survival swimming. Survival swimming was tough. We did 20 laps in in a 25 meter pool for warm ups. We had to jump off the 1 meter board hog tied with full clothing including long pants. My boat has more then enough life jackets and a throw ring. I do need to get use to wearing the kill switch which I normally forget.

My Grandfather was a lifeguard in Galveston in the 20's. The swimming test was get in the surf and swim from 61st pier to the coast guard station. about a six mile swim. Different times, much tougher people.

My wife can not swim either, and no confidence in learning. She loves the boat and being out, and has her a comfy life vest she puts on for the duration. Her being Indian I guess makes it tolerable when it is over 100 out and I am not ready to leave... that or she is just awesome and enjoys the time with me.

When I was in USN Boot Camp in 1973 , we had to pass a swim test if I remember right it was in the first couple days. I'm not sure where the ones that failed went but they were no longer in the Company I was in.

Now they teach them what pronouns to use to keep from hurting someone's feelings.
