Grandad passed two weeks ago. He had 10k funeral policy and he had already paid for cemetery when grandmother passed in 2011. We went to make arrangements for a very simple crypt side service with family and friends. At 97 there aren’t many friends left. The service/funeral was over 16k. Nice but nothing extravagant. I was floored. I will be cremated. is the casket what cost so much ? cremation is the deal we have 2 spots at our church to intern our ashes our church will do the service gratis Buy a casket at Costco or budget casket on north central.

Not to hijack the thread but cremation is indeed cheaper. You can also save on burial plots because if you and spouse opt for cremation you can get two Urns of ashes buried in ONE plot. The headstones or plaques will have both names.

Did you shop around? My dad passed last year and we called a bunch of places. The price differences are astronomical. Some folks just don't want to deal with it when in the midst of grief and the funeral homes know it and take advantage of you. Others charge a fair price and that's it. My dad's casket/embalming/burial was under $5k total. It was going to be $6500 if he had a funeral service (he didn't want one). Would have been more if we wanted open casket visitation (embalming costs more for open casket obviously). FEMA was doing a deal where they pay for funeral services of anyone who died from covid so my mom was reimbursed for all of it. But the point is to shop around. And don't tell them you have $10k coverage or they're just going to start there and go up.

Convenience. Could have done National Cemetery but he chose where he and my grandmother would be. Not a money issue but still a bit shocked. Grandmothers was 14k in 2011 My dads was14k in ‘02 Both were full blown funerals.

My in-laws are old school about their final arrangements and burial. They already "picked out" their plots in the family/church cemetery. They prepaid for their funerals and even picked out and paid for the caskets they want. They are 92 and 89 so it is good they have already made their final arrangements.

Mom passed 11 years ago. Brother and I went to the funeral home and she had chosen and paid for everything. All we paid was honorarium to preacher. Wife and I paid for Neptune several years ago. Believe it was around $2200 apiece. They will come get us anywhere in the world except Iran and North Korea and deliver ashes.
