I work with some of the control panel customers that support how the solar panel installations are done ( battery walls , optimizers , control boards etc... )
With all the Government subsidies , I am not sure it wouldn't be worth it , especially if your either building a new home or redoing your roof .
Today , most of the panels are in the 350 watt range , some are as high as 400watts per panel . By the end of 2023 to early 2024 , the majority of the panels will be 650-700 watts per panel . So you'll need a lot less to generate the needed power . I also expect the battery wall technology to come down in price once competitors to Tesla come to market .
As for durability ---unknown how the newer panels would stand up to hail ===TBD .
My next door neighbor had solar installed two years ago , $17K including one power wall ( $17K was after Government rebates ) . He now pays nothing for electricity and traded in his BMW for a Model S , paying nothing for gas . He estimated complete payback in 6 to 7 years worst case ( using $4 gas as his rate on car )

Totally agree. I will not put panels on my roof.

I have thought about putting them and the back of the property.

Bob you should make them look like little bushes or trees. Like the cell phone towers.

Not so sure about that any more with the cost of energy prices. Years ago I could see it being about the "greener" thing, but today I'd rather NOT be paying the electric company and putting those savings into my diesel truck/tractor and making money. Don't give a toot about the whole "green" thing, I just want to quit paying other people money.

I could care less about it being green. I'm interested in saving some money.

I just don't want to worry about the power grid taking a dump in the summer. It was bad enough for four days in winter. Can you imagine four days in August when it's a hundred and stupid outside? Imagine the two fridges and a deep freeze worth of meat.

As a longtime roofer I can tell all you guys that i have inspected many of my neighbors solar panel installs. The majority of companies do not flash the panel leg supports to roof specifications. They just fasten through the shingle directly into wood the decking which will cause leaks eventually and the decking in the attachment areas will rot. Silicone is not a long term sealant or correct Mfg roof spec.. Just FYI.

I agree Kattelyn. I went without power 15 days last September after the hurricane. I was able to handle all of our power needs except for the central AC with a gasoline powered generator. I burned about 150 gallons of gas during this time. The cost wasn’t too bad because the price per gallon was still low, but now? Also fuel is typically hard to find after these events and some folks still think its all about them. I witnessed 2 road rage incidents while waiting for gas.

If you are worried about the power grid going out get your house prepped with a generator. Its cheaper and going to be much more reliable. Those panels don't work well in ice storms. I have done the math what seems like a million times and it never makes sense. If it saved money you would see them on every house.

something like this, 4kw. just an example.

I don't care what anyone says, I have seen hail up to and including grapefruit size, all those flat panels just waiting for a good ole wall cloud with 55,000' tops. grin

You’d be getting a new roof, windows, and who all knows what else at that point. It would just be another insurance hit.

It will never pay for itself. It will also produce less electricity as it gets older.

get it with the wind generator too, you just have lights to see what the roof gypsy is charging instead of a flashlight. grin
