So i went to a creek near my house that i fish a lot and fished in the evening with nightcrawlers on the bottom. Cuaght a bunch of big bullheads. They are so much fun to catch. Has anyone or does anyone fish for them? They dont get as big as their catfish cousins, the channel, blue and flathead catfish. But they fight really good especially on light tackle. They are most active in the evneing just after sunset till about midnight. Nightcrawlers are the best bait ive used for them. You can catch a bunch in a short time. They are also very good to eat if they are taken out of clean water. Just fish right on the bottom and wait until you feel or see in your bend in the rod. They can be caught pretty much eveywhere and can survive in conditions where a lot of other fish cant. The best part is in Texas there is no regulations on them. You can keep as many as you want.

I fish some waterbodies close by home that have good populations of Bullhead. I usually use worms but have also caught them on corn while fishing for carp and Berkley Power Worms. You are right. They fight good on ultralight tackle. boxing

Side Note: I personally do not eat them but have friends of mine who do. They love em! thumb

I catch a bunch on corn while fishing for carp. DO NOT put your thumb in their mouth, LOL. Found that out really quick.

Yeah, got a buddy that is willing to buy any I catch for flathead fishing. I'm just not interested in handling those nasty fish.

If you have the space , put a kiddie pool full of de-chlorinated water in the shade and keep them there for about a week to clean the bad taste out of them . Works for turtles and crayfish as well .

I don't fish for them but I've caught plenty of them. Definitely fun to catch.

As a kid they were the only type catfish in the 10-acre lake I had access to. We caught them on shrimp tightlining off the bottom. The biggest one I ever caught was 4lb. We were happy to eat them. In the early seventy's they stocked channels catfish and we weren't allowed to fish there any more. food

When I was a kid growing up in north Iowa, and we wanted to fish, we would go out at night with a flashlight and catch nightcrawlers by the bundle.

This was in our own yards, everywhere!

Dumb question, where are you getting nightcrawlers here in north Texas, or wherever you are?

...?

I didn't actually catch the nightcrawlers myself, I bought them at this really nice fishing shop in Fort Worth called Olsens Pro Am Fishing shop. Very nice fishing store and they have anything from fishing licenses to minnows and nightcrawlers and fishing tackle and and all different kinds of baits and lures.

Walmart keeps them in stock. Interestingly enough, just as is the case with minnows or any other live bait, crawlers you catch yourself outperform what you buy at the store. Probably doesn’t matter for bullheads as they eat anything from hotdogs to crawlers to chicken livers, but with fish that are a little bit trickier to catch, a crawler you dig up that’s native to the area will fish better than one from a box.

The diversity of our Texas waters is amazing and I will chase anything that will pull on my line, especially if it results in a record. roflmaoBullheads pull hard for their size and usually are eager to eat once you find them. They are a great fish to start kids out on.
