Drove to my mom's in Raton for a week worth of visiting and working on her house. I was more than a little upset about the cost of gas and I had to take my Tundra which is not the most fuel efficient vehicle I own so I decided to do the speed limit to see the difference that would make. Normally I drive it between 81 to 85 mph and I have to get my first tank of gas in Childress and then top the tank in Dumas and in Clayton. This trip I was able to make it to Dumas for the first tank and I made it to Raton with a half of tank. Wow, what a difference it made to keep it at the speed limit!!! Normally I get about 16 mpg and this trip I averaged 20.5 mpg. I wasn't watching it closely but I would guess it only added about 45 minutes to an hour to the trip total. It was also kinda nice to not be on the constant look out for the po-po.
I guess that makes me officially an 'Old'. Thanks Biden or should I say "FJB!"
Just got back from New Mexico 2 days ago. I commented to my wife that not nearly many cars were driving over the speed limit. Usually, cars sail past me as I cruise @ 77MPH, but I was the one passing more then were passing me.

I've done versions of this with different vehicles over the years. Had an Explorer 4L v6 that averaged 19mpg, did a long drive (Galveston to DFW) at 62mph and got 26mpg. Likewise, the old Nissan Sentra (2.0L) which normally got 30mpg did almost 50mpg at 60mph for a similar drive. But you sure do tick off alot of drivers by doing this

I've altered my driving style. Mostly highway to work. I just hang out in the old folks lane. Trying to stay out of the throttle.

I did keep my foot out of the throttle and used cruise control from the time I picked up 35W out of Burleson to my job. I got 45 mpg, but I wasn't happy. I didn't cuss anybody, I didn't flip anybody the bird... it just didn't feel like my everyday commute. Not sure it's worth it.
