I am not sure how many follow MLF bass tournaments but this has really spiked my interest. I do not enjoy the traditional tournament style with 7 big fish and find it boring but this MLF style is more to my liking. A lot of people do not like it because its more of a numbers deal but I enjoy it. Would anyone else like to see those style tournaments for Crappie?

Magnolia Crappie Club did one last year called Boat Flipping Freaks at Grenada and about 25 folks entered. Entry fee was $700 I think? Every fish over 1.5 counted and there was a marshal in every boat. Lake fished tough though and some folks didn't catch a fish over 1.5. I like the challenge of finding 7 big fish myself but wouldn't be against fishing one like that! Find a dock, or loaded brushpile, or bridge column and cast little jigs and weight a little every cast if they met the minimum. The problem with that format is getting enough marshals and then none of the scales will be the same. I've had a half dozen Rapala scales and none of them weight the same. And would you have to sign off on every catch? That would take forever if your tossing em in the floor of the boat every cast? I wish they would do away with live bait in the big circuits but I'll have some minnows on board till they do! thumb

I do not follow any of the crappie tournaments and I did not know that. That's cool that it already has been thought of in a sense. Grenada to me doesn't set up as a good lake to try that on. MLF formant (numbers deal) on the best big fish lake in the country. MLF seems to have it down as far as the scales go but I am not sure which ones they use. The marshals would be the biggest issue I can think of. MLF has also done away with signing for every fish and I believe they sign off at the end of each period to save time. I think it would be pretty interesting on the crappie side. I know I would sign up for one in a split second

3 big fish are easier to catch! A lot harder to get 7 big ones! Especially 2 or 3 days in a row!!

Pro Crappie Trail did a close MLF format for a couple years. That was the trail run by Jerry Hancock and Brad Williams. Invitational only and limited boats. Lake divided into 3 areas. Each boat assigned to an area. 3 periods, 2.5 hrs each, boats rotate each period, weigh 3 fish each period, start stop time for each period. There were Marshals in the boats to observe. Marshals didn't weigh each fish as caught. Some tournaments were team some were individual. I was a marshal for the first tournament. Not all tournaments had marshals.

As Slew stated, finding and extra 20-30 people who will volunteer their time is tough. Having communication via wifi is not always possible on some lakes. And if it's a 2 day event, marshals have to stay over night at their expense, probably not gonna happen. If a promoter wanted to start something like that the entry fee would be at least $1500. Got to have wifi capable tablets and back ups, pay marshals expenses. Can't get the big bucks from sponsors without TV deals. And TV deals call for camera men and editing and production directors, ect lots of expenses. Crappie fishing isn't quite at that level.
