Hey Everyone,

Longtime TFF’r but new to the Saltwater section and new to offshore fishing in general. We’re heading out Friday and projected winds are 15-25 mph out of the SSW. In my bass boat on a lake I know what that does to water but was wondering if that’s a high wind or low wind for offshore and how big of waves might that scenario create?

Have some serious fisherman but also some boat riders and would like to know what I should expect from the waves.

Heading out in a 30 ft v hull. Any knowledge shared is appreciated.

Winds are important no doubt but you should be looking at swell info. I like windfinder.com but there are many others. Swell info has a lot of easy to read data but I think they underestimate the swells.

Look at swell forecast and the frequency of the swells. 3-4 foot swells at 8 seconds is not nearly as bad as 3-4's at 3 seconds. Also make sure you're looking at weather forecasts. A thunderstorm or front can make conditions nasty in a hurry. I was offshore once and a cold front that was forecast to pull up stationary around Waco came on down and met us 50 miles offshore. Swells went to 8-10 feet almost instantly. Only thing we could do was ride it out in a 30' boat.

Also remember the swell forecasts are just forecasts. Last time I was offshore it was supposed to be 2-3's at 5 seconds. It was 4-5's the first 5 miles out then turned into 6's after that.

You don't want to go if the forecast is right for friday. It will be nasty. Trust me from 30 years on the gulf and also a charter captain. It is suppose to be rough like it always is in june.

While I tend to put a lot of stock in swell info many of the best offshore captains out there rely more on the wind info since that is what generates the swell info. The wind forecasts are often wrong so you have to go by what you are seeing.

Fair point coastal winds are obviously the hardest to forecast since they're seemingly wrong more than they're right and at times they can be drastically off which in turn makes the swell forecasts just as iffy.

I've made the 3 plus hour drive a couple of times to go offshore fishing when conditions were forecast to be good just to find out conditions are a no go and turn around and head home. I've gone offshore in the kayak also and swell/wind forecast/info is maybe at times more important in a kayak than in a boat.

I don't get to go offshore much anymore due to the number of weather windows combined with my schedule just don't meet that often. I'll admit I am ready for some fresh snapper on my dinner plate.

Great info and very helpful. We are staying on the Beach so I'll at least have a good view that morning to see what it's like before heading out. Swell info is a great resource and something I wish they would copy for some of our bigger freshwater lakes.

The boat is a Tiara 3000 so I have hopes for Friday AM. If we are able to get out, I'll be sure to provide the report. Thanks Gents!

Update: Too rough. Boat ride was ok but too rough to fish effectively. Great learning experience though.
