Hey guys, I live up here on the red river and don’t have much experience with saltwater fishing… taking the family down to Galveston next week and was thinking about fishing the San Luis pass and maybe a jetty or 2. I’d also like to try and catch a small mess of blue crab… Can you catch crab this time of year? Would the pass be a good place to take my 12 year old son and 6 year old daughter to catch a few fish? Any advice or pointers would greatly be appreciated!

I'd stay away from SLP. Too dangerous.Signs posted. I'd try the Texas City Dike area. I live down here and it's a much better place to fish, beach area / swimming on the North side/ beware of currents due to the heavy shipping heading to Houston., couple of small piers on the North side, a covered Pavilion just as you get on the Dike, a kitty park for the kids at the base of the Dike. No bait camps on the Dike anymore but Boyd's One Stop Tackle/Bait, and Grill has all your fishing needs. NO booze sold there. The Dike is 5 1/4 miles long that extends out into Galveston Bay. Most anglers fish the end of the Dike on the South Side. The Dike runs East and West. I think you will like going there. Stay safe

I agree with vbottom, SLP is dangerous for adults, I’d never let a kid in the water there now days. That being said, we camped there a lot when I was growing up. And we caught a ton of fish on the beach and lots of crabs at the boat ramp park.
Texas city dike, rock groins along the Galveston sea wall, south jetty. All good places to do what your looking for. The rocks can be slick when wet so be careful.

SLP is indeed a dangerous place, dang near drowned a couple times wading there when I was a kid, you're in thigh deep water fighting a current, then step off into a hole and down you go. Then add the few times a shark grabbed your stringer and drug you fifty yards, that's always a crowd favorite.
