Download one of the Lowrance product emulators and play with the one on there in simulator mode. There will be a side-by-side graph and flasher screen. There is definately an art to reading a flasher. The folks who can do it have my utmost respect.

Flashers are almost a lost art. Most people only use them for depth range. The biggest mistake most people make is turning their sensativity up too much, then they get too many echos that distorts the reading. Only turn them up enough to get a solid bottom reading.
You will learn to see if your over rock, mud, or grass. And if you watch it, you will see what depth the fish are holding at. For fish, don't expet to see solid flashes. They will just appear as quick blimps and will vary at various depth ranges unless the fish are just stacked on each other.
