So my son and I are on vacation 1000 miles from home and my engine started smoking this morning bad. I killed it and have started it since. I noticed the last few days it puffed a little smoke on star up a few times, today it didn’t stop. I can smell oil burning smoke too. We have done a lot of idling and since it was windy, we ran slow but under a heavy load. The engine is 2012 250 SHO with around 250-260 hrs. Never had any issues.
I’ve read about the engines “making oil” will this get into the combustion chamber? I am on the water using the trolling motor only. I plan to check the oil level when I get off. Just hoping I didn’t break a piston ring or ruing the valves?? Any help would be great Thanks

typically when this happens you will have a crack in the heads or block allowing water to get in the oil. making oil is a seperate kind of problem pull your dipstick an see if the oil is milky.

The oil is milky. I’m assuming the head or heads are toast. I never got over temperature alarm though.
Is there any fixing this or do I have to replace the power head?

I just went through this about a year ago.
Tried lots of things in an effort to save money, but ended up having to replace the powerhead.
Good Luck, hopefully it something much simpler in your case.

Worst part for me is I had just bought a new lower unit. When I got my boat back it was smoking the first time I took it out. Just progressively got worse.
At the time I replaced lower unit, I found a new 250 SHO at Boerne marine for I believe $23k. Was told my upper was fine, so replaced lower unit. Then 4 months later I was replacing power head.
I don't think it cost me quite $16,000, but it was close to it. All in all, I was wishing I bought that new SHO from Boerne, because when it came time to replace powerhead, there were no new motors available without a long wait.

One of my biggest fears taking trips a long way away is having boat issues when you get there... Man that's gotta suck
