How do you fish them? What time of year? What are you looking for on the lake to make you throw one?
Will my swimbait setup be ok for one (Dobyns 795SB, 20lb fc)?

Was down at tackle store and picked one up. Nichols lures 8”. It’s a big sob lol.

Thats a BIG one! Those are actually tough to throw since they knuckle ball through the air so bad. Most guys will cast them out, and either crank really hard for 3-4 turns and let if fall back to bottom or, will stroke it with the rod tip and then let it settle. Just got to let the fish tell you what they want.

I throw them all the time on a med heavy rod with 20 lb test.

Mine fall initially really well, but when i rip it off the bottom it usually doesn't "flutter" a second time and sinks like a brick. I must be missing something

795SB will be no problem.

Yessir. i can watch it on the livescope, after that first fall I can't get it to flutter again 9x out of 10. Must be something in my technique and how i'm popping it off the bottom.

While not completely necessary that Dobyns 795 will be fine for those ridiculously big spoons. I have one and a Dobyns 805. Either work. It’s a whooping throwing those gigantic slabs of metal. Similar to throwing an a-rig all day or a big swimbait. Not snapping your wrists to cast these. Big side arm lob casts.

If you want it to flutter, the swivel should be a foot up from the spoon (not spoon—->split ring—>swivel—>line)

You want spoon—>split ring—>1 foot of line—>swivel—>main line.

If the swivel is directly on the spoon, this will promote spinning and not fluttering.

Swivel one foot up will promote side to side wobbling and fluttering.

Easy to lose fish on the Magnum spoon. They use the weight of the spoon to throw it.

That's some good info. I was out with my fishing mentor a couple weeks ago, we saw some good fish near a small brush pile. I tied on the BPS knock off, and dropped it down. I could see the spoon going up, then basically right back down vertically. I will try this tomorrow when I am out. I think there is a fine line on the size of line used which will help the bait flutter, vs giving slight resistance to the head of the spoon which would prevent fluttering. As crazy as it sounds, i catch sandbass with the flutter spoon. Hooked a really nice catfish last summer, the thump was startling when it ate the spoon.

Good topic.
