Went on a short camping/fishing trip a few hours northeast with the goal to target Gar and possibly nab a species that's eluded me thus far, Bowfin. The title spoils it, we were both successful in landing our first few Bowfin! These are the biggest for each of us, all but one Bowfin came on cut Bluegill fished on the bottom.

This one was my first and the largest of the day

They're such gorgeous fish!

Probably could've lipped this one but I wasn't going to chance it lol

Damon with his first, they were producing slime like crazy when out of the water.

Catch and release. The dream - to catch one of every species of Freshwater fish in our great state! If only I can resist Carp...

Awesome fish. Congrats! I caught one over 10 lbs at Lake Fork back in the eighties on a 10'' black worm. When I set the hook, I knew for sure I had caught the new state record.

Have never caught a bowfin. For that matter, have never seen one in person. Very cool!

The photos put me mind of the big fish in South America . . . and my memory is so foggy this morning that I'll have to look the name up.

Congrats on your catch

Like Banker said, they are great fighters. I caught my first on a closed face reel back in the early 70's on a Boy Scout campout on the Sabine River in a slough. Talk about a thrill for a young teenager. Have caught many since them and they always give a rush and a strong fight,
Congratulations on a new to you species.
