Years ago I worked for a company that installed, removed, and refurbished all the pay phones in Houston and the surrounding area. Interesting fact, if a pay phone did not make $125 a day it was removed.

I can’t remember the last one I saw. It was in the 90’s that I last used one.

I saw one at Johnson Branch on ray Bob next to the fish cleaning station last October. I don't know if it works.

It has been awhile since I have seen one. Love watching old T.V. shows where you see the pay phones.

There was one recently (within the last seven years) in front of the Sam's on Coit and G. Bush.
Had my kiddos make a phone call on it in case they never had the chance to use a pay phone again.
Don't know if it's still there or still working.

Dang, $125... That's a lot of calls. I remember when it cost a dime, and then it college it cost a quarter (for local calls of course)... I use to call the girlfriend/ now wife once a week while away at college and would have to pump $10-$12 in change after our 10 minute long distance calls... Last ones I saw were in London, GB about 7 years ago. They're sort of tourist attraction so they said they'd never totally get rid of them... There are still two "station" that I know of, had to pull in to see if the still had phones but they were removed years ago... Dan

Back in High School I was friends with a girl whose dad worked for Ma Bell. There was a code you could put into a pay phone and when the call was over you got your money back.
Don't think it worked for long distance. I used that trick a lot. Only downside was you had to have the .25 to start with.


Remember back in the late '80s Dallas PD convinced the phone company to rig all the pay phones up and down Harry Hines to only make outgoing calls to try and cut down on hooker and drug deal hook ups.
Then they just started taking them out.

The last time I had a problem with washing machine I went to an old laundry mat in Weatherford. They had one. First one I have seen in years.

There's one next to the gas pumps at the HEB in Gatesville. Don't know if it works, but it appears to be in good shape.

I think the last one I saw was in a airport and no telling how many years ago that was.

There are billions of payphones throughout the world. They are just in your hands now. They also make 125 dollars a month or more. Do that math.

I quit using payphones many decades ago when I saw a homeless guy let the receiver hang off one so he could relieve himself on it.

There are still a few on the beaches along the Honoapiilani Highway, west Maui. Those are the only ones I've seen in many years.

Can you imagine the nasty germ spreading that went on when pay phones were plentiful? I used them a bunch back in the day, never even thought about grabbing that receiver and putting it up to my face. I probably wouldn’t touch one now, gas pumps are dangerous enough
