What’s the closest place to Midland to catch perch? Supposedly there is a pond in Monahans and a lake in Big Spring. Anyone ever catch perch at either or somewhere else near Midland?

I mean that is true but I only came here asking because google is pretty lacking on this particular area / region.

What is also true, is if you google this species or that species anywhere in TX a big number of your search results will be to this web page and forum where people have discussed and shared information about fishing in TX…

A lot of people travel to Amistad from the Midland area. But that's not very close.

I have never fished West Texas before but looking at sunfish records on some West Texas water bodies I found the following.

OH Ivey. Bluegill Record 1.05 Lbs.
Lake Nasworthy. Bluegill Record. .63 Lbs Length 9.5"
Concho River. Redbreast Record. ..57 Lbs length 9.5" Rio Grande Cichlid Record. 1.37 Lbs. length 11.25"

The sunfish bite is picking up and the first spawn will be in full swing in the next couple of weeks. The sunfish will be very active. Hope you locate some fish and let us know how you do.

Side Note: I am pretty sure that there are a lot of creeks that would hold good populations of sunfish also.

Sorry Banker we dont have creeks out here. For the OP Midland had trout stockings so you have some city lakes and almost any small lake will have some sunfish though quality and quanity will vary. Commanche Trail in Big Lake is a pretty lake, drove by it many times but never fished it. It will have sunfish size and quanity no idea OH Ivie is a great lake..The San Angelo lakes and Concho river are options. Little further Oak Creek or Fort Phantom Hill are options. EV Spence at one time had spawning populations of striped bass but it has been used to water central Texas for so many years it is a shadow of itself. Also had serious algae blooms/ It has had a stable water lever fpr a while and I read somewhere it is making a comeback. If you dont know any of those water bodies look them up. TPWD willl have some information on them on their website.

Hey there gemcityslayer when I was a young lad, back in 1965 lol, my Dad took me fishing for 2 days up and down the Pecos River, and we caught some pretty nice fish. My favorite memory of Him, so if there's been any rain across that area west of you up through New Mexico you might get lucky and have a great fishing adventure.

Living without creeks close by would be very hard for me! I love creek fishing! thumb
