With a well timed full moon this weekend and (so far) a good wind forecast, am hitting up Choke Canyon for the first time this weekend for bass. Any recommendations / “wish I would have though of this” / or other good things to know while there in a kayak?

Man I'm seeing wind gusting between 20 and 25 depending on which site I look at. I'd guess this would be more in the afternoon. Might keep that in mind when considering launch points. Also lotta gators...

You get out of it what you put into it!

Depending on wind and such I may be out there myself this weekend so I might see ya. If the wind is howling I'll shift gears to a narrower, calmer lake like Coleto but...

If you like hydrilla you will be smiling...there's lots of grass from one end to the other. You got lots of timber on the upper end (Caliham & 99). Wider open, main lake stuff on the lower end (South Shore). Last time I was there was weeks ago before the spawn so I don't know what patterns have been productive. As mentioned there's plenty of gators but I've never been bothered by them (but I also don't go messing with them and just give them their space). The lure I have caught the most fish on there...probably a chartreuse/black 1/2oz lipless. Take lots of fluids cuz it gets hot out there. You can camp at Caliham and have park personnel manning the gate, no camping at SS & 99 and nobody manning the gate (so have $5/person handy for the envelope or you have to drive back to town). Good luck! thumb

Thanks for the info all! Yeah the gators certainly have my attention, but (in times past) I’ve learned that if you don’t mess with them and keep your head on a swivel, they’ll mind their own. Thankfully I don’t believe it’s mating season for them quite yet. The grass and timber are what I’m most excited for…I’m mostly going to be throwing big baits, but will usually have a chatter or lipless at the ready. Am sure most have spawned out at this point, but am hearing there’s still lots of 20” fish coming out. Good luck to ya’ll.

How did you do Bourbon? who_knows

We went today (Sunday) and the bite was on! I caght easily between 15-20 bass, biggest landed went about 4 lbs. And had one that I lost that jumped clean out of the water 25 feet from me that was easily bigger than my PB 12-3. Massive fish that hit a squarebill on the outside edge of some hydrilla.

I'll one going back again soon for hopefully more of the same.

We didn’t get to go unfortunately- stuff popped up that kept us more local. HOWEVER, we did paddle up Amistad and camped out for a night. Landed a 8.4 on what I call a Cali special (senko t-rigged with a punching skirt). The lady broke off on a DD later that night. We’re planning on Choke for this weekend barring another set back. Glad you got on them man!!! Sad to hear about the lost one, but it’s always a good feeling to at least be invited to the dance.
