me and my dad will be going out catfishing for the third time on friday before a 1 month-long hiatus. Still havent gotten a bite from a single one, but I would like to make it worthwhile and get on some cats this friday. Last time i went cat fishing, i was told they were deeper than where i was fishing. Now that the weather has warmed up quite a bit i was wondering how or where they will be hanging out? Likely going to fish off of the old lewisville dam or maybe arrowhead park from about 5-7:45. in terms of bait, i have some left over frozen buffalo fish and i think i might be able to get some chicken breast. I've heard that as the crappie begin to spawn (have they started yet?) the cats will simultaneously come in more shallow. would this be prime for the old dam? I appreciate the advice!

I would say find some riprapโ€ฆ. Get some minnows under a bobber should get multiple species. Fished 12-18โ€ about 2-6โ€™ from bank should get you bit
Definitely crappie were hitn before front go getem thumb

Danial, they should be coming up shallow. Last time I was out I caught 'em in 10 feet as apposed to 40 feet the times before. Water surface temp was up to above 60 degrees which had the shad in really shallow water. Some of the shad were spawning right along the bank. If you have a cast net, you should be able to find some bait. Throw that bait on a Santee rig where you have some shallow water with access to deep water and structure.

Good luck and good hunting!

As Tim said. Fresh bait in shallow should get you some fish.

Monday I was catching them in 1-3ft a lot better than 4-6 bites were 3 to 1 ratio toward the shallower rods
Fresh shad was the ticket

Danial,

Definitely ditch that frozen bait and find some fresh shad. They have been running shallow this week and should be easier to catch now. Should get bit at the old dam. Good luck!

Follow the bait. When you find the bait you find the fish. With yo-yo weather that may change a little or a lot every day.
