What kind of fish is this? I caught it in a slew on my place that filled after a recent flood. I think it’s a Red Ear but not for sure. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2022/04/full-93128-134511-738fd448_707d_4f18_90e4_580454229492.jpeg)

Lucky you. Good sized shellcrackers are a great fish to catch and to eat. Let them grow and reproduce.

Looks like 3 Orangespotted Sunfish with pale Winter colors. All the ones I have caught have that same unique shape, and the White outline around the gill flap. They get some awesome colors in the Summer. My . A couple of thing to look at when trying to identify these two beautiful sunfish. 1. One of the characteristics of a Orange Spotted Sunfish is an elongated snout. The above fish have this characteristic. Redear do not have that and their nose area is short. 2. The opercular or ear flap on a redear is either red or orange, these two have no pigment. No pigment and white edging would be characteristic of a orange spotted sunfish. 3. The blue iridescent and orange iridescent spots are a big indicator but the blue more than anything. 4. A Orange spotted has almost a clear dorsal fin while the redear does not. Note how you can see his finger through the dorsal fin in the above picture. These are just a few identifiers but by no means are definate, the fish are gorgeous and thanks for posting the pics!
