B.A.S.S. Bans All Depth Finders Except Flashers
In a shocking move, B.A.S.S. CEO Chase Anderson has announced that in the 2023 season, only flashers will be allowed in all B.A.S.S. events. This announcement has drawn mixed reviews from anglers and angry responses from Humminbird, Lowrance and Garmin. Angler responses seemed to be based on age, with older anglers supporting the move and younger ones shaking their heads in disbelief.
Anderson in a short statement said: “We know this move is going to cause some ripples in the fishing industry and tournament world, but we at B.A.S.S. feel that in the interest of conservation and the future of bass fishing, this is the best option. Our Conservation Director, Gene Gillilland, has been meeting with fisheries biologist across the nation and all agree that the latest developments in sonar pose a serious threat to bass populations. In addition, our viewing audience has overwhelmingly let us know that watching anglers staring at their depth finders all day is not entertaining. Most are pulling for anglers that are fishing the old fashioned way and just relying on standard sonar and their fishing instincts. We have consulted with our sponsors in the electronics industry and while they are not happy with our decision, understand our reasoning.”
Anderson also mentioned that many weekend anglers had complained about the cost of electronics and stated they couldn’t afford most of the newer units. He felt the move by B.A.S.S. would eventually be adopted by other tournament trails and trickle down into local tournaments as well.

It's geezer joke day on the TFF

I hope I see at least 1 borderline believable joke today. Like maybe if they banned "live sonar" then it might make me think twice.

I think the only depth finder that should be legal is a 8 oz weight and color coded string.

I've already saw one today that I thought was pretty good. A company that makes off road components for Jeeps and 4x4's that my son buys parts from announced they were going into the breakfast cereal business today.

Every old school angler would jump for joy in thier retirement homes.


They miss the days of following constellations back to the ramp
as the trees were still full of leaves all while fighting murder hornets
that still had nest in the branches ....

They’d all still show up, and they’d all(mostly) still catch em. It isn’t about having FFS, it’s about NOT having the same advantages as the next guy. If they only allowed flashers and one rod and reel, the same guys would likely still find a way to win.

This very true. I was about 8 years old when this all got started at the level it is now with Ray Scott. Within a year or two or three of BASS getting started I had an uncle that became a member of BASS and that set me up to be able to read through the pages about the folks we now consider legends. They didn't have any of the stuff we have now and flasher was it and I bet some didn't even have that, probably what my dad used, a window weight on a rope with knots tied in it. These guys absolutely smoked them.

Just watched a guy without a single graph on his boat win a 3 day Wild West Apex Pro Tour even on a deep, clear western lake.
