recently purchased a bay boat that I intended to use for fresh water and hopefully eventually offshore fishing. The electronics need to be upgraded. In the interest of purchasing something that I can use for both the boat and casual use, I am have been looking into an Ipad with built in GPS along with a mount and the Navionics app. Anyone have any experience they wish to share from recently?

I tried it a long time ago. The iPad overheated quickly and was only visible on very cloudy days, or night. It wasnt worth trying, but I found out the hard way. Also, they CANNOT get wet. Period.

I second SteezMacQueen. From our experience, being able to see them in the daylight is extremely tough. We've even had some customers seek out the highest nits on tablet models, buy that model and still can't see them during daylight.
