Planning my next trip to Colorado and want to do myself a favor and not drive straight through. I think I am about over 12+ hour straight drives.

Amarillo seems like the right place. Lots of hotels online of course but I am looking for personal suggestions for places to stay for one night on the way up and then on the way back.

Key here is SAFE. I will have my wife with me and my truck loaded with my kayak and camping and fishing gear etc. I cannot have any theft and the wife gets weirded out by crack heads and meth smokers. Go figure? Need a secure place.

Any suggestions gang!?

No suggestions but you should be able to get there by morning.

Ok so how about another town near there? I looked at Clarendon. They have a nice hotel there I stayed at once years ago. Not sure what its like now.

Reviews online are all over the place on most these properties. Hard to tell who had a legit bad experience and who is just a cry baby who expects 5 star when they are paying for 2 stars.

My best suggestion is to rent a Uhaul trailer for your gear and pad lock it at night. In the past when I hunted a lot "out west" I kept a small cargo trailer just to pile all my camping gear in for the trip out there and back. Kept everything safe, dry and clean.

We have made the run to CO often and always stay in Amarillo going up and back. Usually we stay at the Holiday Inn Express. Our last trip up there was last July and everything was good.

Don't let 'em take your saddle in Houston.

He’ll probably only have what he has on.

Is all of that stuff going to be in the back of a truck and open or do you have a topper on the back?

There are going to be methheads and crackheads all along your journey, no getting away from them there.

With all of that being said, I work in Amarillo quite a bit and prefer the Holiday Inn Express next to the Big Texan. Its new and has a restaurant and bar downstairs. I still would not leave any unsecured items in the back of a truck though.
