I am all about the secondary market. Don't get me wrong I love new lures it's like Christmas every time I go to bass pro because...$5 here $10 there...O I need this one etc. I have a pretty good eye on bills and such but some of the older stuff that I have acquired I am having trouble placing it in my tackle. Where as all my other have specific locations since I already know the exact depth since they are new. My question is, is there a "universal" way to actually tell without testing each one.

If Iā€™m understanding your concern correctly, I think your best bet would be to try and find the manufacturer model number and find the specifics that way.

Post a picture of these mysterious crankbaits and Iā€™m sure someone here could tell you.

I would compare the mystery baits to the bill design, length, angle and bait size to the other baits you know the depth range of. The baits should run similar depths and action.

There are tackle nerds out there that can tell you any thing you want about any bait. I think a Facebook page would be a better place to find out the information on your baits because of the user friendliness of uploading pictures.

I check the depth on my Crankbaits with my LiveScope-I'm new to LiveScope but it works-checking the depth. Hope you have a LS to use

Ott Defoe has a video that does good job of estimating Crankbait depth

The thing I've seen over the years; especially with the deeper versions, is some of the manufacturers will post on their website or on the package what conditions need to be present for a crankbait to reach it's advertised maximum depth.
For the shallower versions I test in our swimming pool and have learned some pretty neat stuff. I've also learned just how slow you can run a large double willow leaf spinnerbait and the blades still do their job. It's insanely slow.
Kind of off topic but if you have a swimming pool available try all your hard baits and soft plastics. You'll learn a lot more about the lures you use and methods of presentation.

Yeah I don't have a pool for the older stuff. Wish I did. I've worked on presentation with my newer stuff since I have a little more to go off of. But thanks for the help.

Just know this. Most baits will only run the specified depth on 8-10# line on a VERY long cast. Strike King says their 6XD will run to 18-20' deep. It may run to 20' if KVD is throwing it on 10# Flo making 40 yard casts. A swimming pool not practical for testing deep divers for maximum depth.

First, I won't be throwing it on 10# line. Secondly, most guys can't throw a bait 40 yards. When you cast the bait out it takes the first 15 yards of retrieve to get the bait down near it's max depth.

I can tell you from real world experience on 15# fluorocarbon it runs about 14-15' deep at most, unless it is trolled or long-lined. If you are using mono it knocks off another foot or 2 of depth. For that reason I always upsize my baits to the next level.

This is not a knock on anyone's baits. Just my observation and I've throw n a few of them.

Ken I threw a ton of deep divers, Mann's 20+'s, Bil Norman DD22's, Poe's Super Cedar (wish they still made those) and those are my observations exactly, threw them on 10 pound mono years ago trying to get the maximum depth and I felt like the whole time I was casting I was just orchestrating a train wreck. Definitely getting more depth but immediately started loosing more of them. I usually threw them on 14 pound mono.
