Jsinn01 I never have had any luck at Brushy creek but I can't say I have fished there enough times to figure things out. I would like to get together and you can show me where the crappie usually hand out.

Somerville watershed is getting some very good rain. Shh, Don't tell anyone but I think I smell white bass running up Nails Creek. Maybe even a few other places too

Speaking of slick banks, after this heart surgery I have had to be real careful not to fall, slip and break open any stiches. So I have had to fish from the top of banks rather than down low next to the water. To be honest, I probably should wait another week before fishing, I have pressed my luck these last two trips. But I also know there is only three weeks left of good fishing for these fish, so one has to make the best of their time while they are up in these creeks and rivers. This years spawn marks my fiftieth year fishing for spawning whites and I have never missed a year even when I lived in another state. That's a long time to do this sport and ever trip has been a blast. The white bass spawn fishing trip stories are endless. You name it and I have tried it. From catching my own live bait to now nothing but that 1/32 ounce jig. I use to use live spot tail minnows fished on a small hook free floating them so I could watch these whites come to the surface and grab them. Sight fishing is what I called it. I loved watching them shoot up to the surface and chase those minnows. And the river water was crystal clear to watch every bit of this action take place. We would catch our minnows before the sun came up in pitch darkness. One swipe down the river bank with a sein and you had all the live bait two people needed to fish with all day long. And the camp outs on the river were priceless. But when I started this sport, there was no limit on how many one could catch. Therefore I took home truck loads back in those days. Another crazy thing about this sport, I'm also a huge black bass angler. But when the whites are spawning, I stop fishing for blacks and only target whites. And trust me, this is not easy to do. Right now the black bass are on the move and it is now that you target the big girls moving up on spawning beds. But white bass fishing with ultra light tackle is still my go to fishing when the spawn is in full swing. What an amazing sport. do you use 1/8 ounce jig or not? why?

Great job Doug and Jon I had the same experience on Saturday morning. I caught 51 and the majority of them were females. Here's another observation that can be totally disregarded. When the fish are actively spawning the males are preoccupied and difficult to catch. The females on the other hand will hunker down tight to structure of some type to try and rest from the constant beating and pushing of the males. If you can drift that fly or lure onto their nose you can catch them. Note Jon's description of the drift, this is what Fishytx always taught me and the reason he utilizes a 1/32 ounce jig. He used to say if you're using a 1/8 ounce jig your just getting lucky and knocking them in the head. Also note the HL&S video of how he dead drifts a light fly. That drift will often cover 15 feet or more and the current slowly brings the fly down onto the fishes nose. The females won't chase anything. hi J-Moe, it was nice talking to you at the parking lot when you were about to leave Saturday. AS you said it was slow for most people and I am one of them. I caught only two all afternoon around the horseshoe area. But I caught four at one place at close to 6pm on my way back to parking lot.

We got about a 1/4 inch of rain here in the west Yegua area. Not sure how much fell in the middle and east creek water shed. But anything we get will improve the number of fish in this creek. We could use a little more dirty water to pull some more fish from the lake.

According to NOAA both the east and middle Yegua rose by a few inches. Not sure if that is enough to improve the run or not??? I’ll let the experts figure that out
It was a different world when we were boys and girls....

Any rain we receive is a plus at this time. You want a keep a good flow going so the fish are spread out and it keeps fish coming upstream. How ever, in the month of March you really don't want a see a big flood where it will knock out a week or two of fishing. But a big flood will bring up a ton more fish for sure. Its just the catch fish time frame is narrowed down a lot. Oh well, we are at natures beckon call and we will do the best we can with the hand dealt to us. Right now there are plenty of fish up in this creek, but every stringer that goes out is just that many less fish in there to catch. LOL

I am about to drive over to Irwin bridge to check out the water status. I also want to add another fishing tip. You can take a pare of pliers and flatten the barb on your hook for the health of the fish and for yourself. Removing the barb has two good reasons. You catch a fish and unhook it with little to no damage to the fish. No for the benefit of the angler. Due to all the limbs and string in limbs from people breaking off you tangle up in that stuff and you can't get your bait off. If you flatten that barb your chances of getting that bait back has now increased to a 70% better chance of it coming off. Every time I get hung up I notice the line is around the barb, or the barb is hung up on something keeping it from releasing. So I flatten the barb and I get my jig back 95% of the time. Yes the barb is designed to keep a fish on, but I always keep my line tight on a fish so the hook can't come out anyways. And when I go to unhook a fish, it slides right out. Out of 100 fish, maybe 3 will come off due to me flatting the barb. And that I can live with. I also do this when I'm out fun fishing for black bass. Oh yeah, when the hook sticks you, it too will slide right out. I stuck a hook in my thumb a few days ago. I had a hard time getting that barb out, but I had no choice if I wanted to continue to fish. And yes, it hurt. LOL But if I'm afraid of being hooked, then I better stay at home. Can't tell you how many hooks I have had to pull out of my body. Only went to ER twice to get hooks removed in my life time. But that was two times to many. Flatting the barb is a great thing to try, you wont be disappointed.

Creek is low and crystal clear. Caught 30 in an hour. Flip em on the bank and just keep catching. Kept 13 for the grease, headed home.
