The wheels are to small but will be big enough to use at the ramp for short distances. I give you the furniture dolly.

There are a couple of concrete ramps I launch by that don’t have enough dirt to actually drag my boat over. I only need to scoot about 10-20 feet to get in the water. I’m thinking of strapping this on the stern of the boat, also attach a long strap to it. Then I can lift the bow, roll the stern off in the water and then pull the dolly back out of the water with the strap. Bigger wheels would help, but for now, this should work.

If nothing else, you could take off the wheels and mount 4 inch PVC pipe on top and bottom and use it as a skid.

Did you try it yet? After you spend $20 on the dolly, try one like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Houssem-Carrier-Carrying-Paddleboards-Capacity/dp/B08Z329T56/ref=sr_1_35?crid=R6W48LDKA2EG&keywords=kayak+wheels&qid=1646598562&sprefix=kayak+wh%2Caps%2C139&sr=8-35

Short story: I bought a fly tying vice which I thought would do what I wanted to do, I bought a second vice within a month that was better and within 2 months of that I bought the vice that I wanted.

Translation, (FOR ME) if I try to chince, it never really saves me a dime and most of the time, it costs me more. Buy the right tool for the right job. Just one guy's opinion.

How do you firmly strap it to the stern so that the kayak doesn't tilt or come loose without the use of a "V" block? How do you release the dolly remotely so you can pull it out of the water?

A skid seems like a simple idea if you could cut a long piece PVC sewer pipe in half and use it to cover the keel area which takes the wear and tear, if you can figure out a way to quickly put it on and take it off?

Hope this helps.

I didn’t get to try it yet. Yesterday was launching at a normal dirt ramp. The more I think about it, the more I realize I am going to have to build some rails on it as mentioned above. It’s also possible, the whole idea won’t work.

Just invest in a decent cart. I have been kayaking for 12 years and started 3 different cart projects. Bottom line; I wasted so much time and funds on these projects that did not work. Two years ago, I broke down and got a C-tug and it was worth it. Yes, the strap will come loose on rough surfaces but I've learned to stop and retighten when necessary. Also, it's like mountain biking; choose your line (route). smile

+1 on the C-tug.

C-TUG for the win..I would look for used if possible. There is a you tube vid where someone replaced the straps with bungee cords for a quicker tie down procedure that looks interesting.

C-Tug for me as well. Works decently.

Probably would have tried DIY option but had a gift card to burn.

C-Tug rules. If you FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS the strap won’t slip. It’s a common problem with the C-Tug strap. I have actually used the C-Tug portaging my SoloSkiff with the 5 hp Tohatsu clamped on across Parker’s Cut; it’s rated for 200 lbs.

I’ve just gotten to where I back the truck down and launch right off the bed extender. That’s not at busy ramps though… I do have a wilderness dolly that I modded for my slayer if need be.

I ordered a C-TUG today. Looks to be a really nice product. Looking forward to using it.
