What is this manual of which you speak? he is the mexican dude that just took your rims and tires. Thanks guys. Excellent advice as usual. Over the years, I have used most of the methods you guys have mentioned and never even considered looking at the owners manual. The main reason I'm inquiring now is that I've been told tha t non-uniform tightening can cause warped brake rotors. I don't know if that's true but have warped my share of rotors over the years and figure anything I can do to help prevent that can't hurt. That's probably what's wrong with me. Someone tightened my nuts unevenly. I could blame my ex.
Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools

My truck is 140. I thought that was high and torqued them to 120. I pulled the front tires the other day to put on new shocks. This time I mounted them by feel with the impact the way we did it when I worked at a tire shop years ago, as in 40 years ago lol. I checked torque and all but one clicked at 140. Pretty good muscle memory to hit that impact so close after 40 years! I think some of those youngsters in the tire shops may not be consistent on how much extra hammering they let it go before deciding when to let off the trigger. I did mine this afternoon. They sure did squeak when I broke them loose from that 150 letting go. I set mine on 120 and they felt tight but not quite as tight as I was used to doing them so may bump that up a notch even though I can't see them coming loose like they are. The good news was I still had about 5/32 of brake pad left before the squeeler would hit so I'm going to get some more goody out of those before i change them out. I have them in stock now so probably save a few bucks on price increase I won't have to pay.

A torque wrench is cheap insurance especially when you have multiple trucks and trailers. We pulled out of the shop once with our skid steer on a trailer and I heard something that didn’t sound right. One of the trailer rims was riding on the studs with about 2 lug nuts missing.
Now equipment maintenance day includes checking torque specs on trucks and trailers.
My older F250 calls for 150-165 lbs. I set the dial at 125 then torque to 150. I’m confident having all of them consistent is just as important even though I’m on the low side but I’m also running aftermarket wheels.

Torque then to the recommended 150. You do not want to ever lose a wheel at speed. The torque spec is there for a reason. I hand torque every wheel and I do this for a living. Could be someone’s kid, wife, mother in the car or worse the other car when the wheel comes off. The reason we have all the issues with the lug nuts “swelling” is cheap chrome capped hardware from the factory and worn out sockets.

Ford lug nuts with the thin chrome metal covering on them are pretty much one of the worst engineering designs ever. Replace them.
