I was wondering if someone could recommend what equipment would be good for a beginner to start out with for fishing for bluegill/bream with.I talked to my son the other day who lives in east Texas, and he has just gotten into fly fishing and says its a blast.I have been kinda looking around and see that it can be rather expensive, but just wanting something reasonable at the entry level.

TIA

Hi Mike

There are Scientific Angler starter setups that work really nicely. Also Cortland and some others make nice setups. These are usually 5 or 6 weight setups. Now that might be a bit heavy for any real bluegill fun. So let's also consider a Cabela's Three Forks three weight outfit. I have one, its cheap, its a blast with bass and bluegills since its fairly lightweight tackle and you won't feel like you are winching them in.

Thanks for the advice, that is pretty much just what I was looking for,and in my price range..and I guess Pfleuger is a pretty trusted name in fishing equipment.
Now after I get this outfit I'm sure I'm going to have ALOT more questions,as I have never done this..but have been doing a lot of reading, and listening to my son..of course any fishing is fun in my opinion..

Thanks

livebait,

Welcome to flyfishing. I'm sure your Son has told you many great things about flyfishing and you will soon be finding out that it's all true!

Good luck on your entry level outfit search (rr has given you his good advice) and do not hesitate to ask away with any questions. I will warn you tho, that flyfishing is addictive and one outfit will NOT be enough.

Let us know if we can help.........

hey livebait

Getting on the water is what its all about! That link seemed to not take me to a product page. Which one did you get? What weight rod?

I looked up Carbon on the map, a little close to Abilene than Fort Worth. There ought to be a ton of stock tanks out there. Those are big fun in the wee purple hours with a popper. Bass will leap out and come crashing down on poppers. Bluegills don't seem to leap but get pretty aggressive anyways.

Carbon is south of Eastland, which is about mid way between ft worth and abilene..
Yes I do have access to a few really nice stock tanks out here, and finally this year they are full to the point of running over, been catching lots of bluegills, and a few bass on reg gear.

Not sure why that link didnt work work ,but I got the Cahill Fly/Ross Flystart Fly Combo ,its a 2/3 wt?...the product number is # dh-313913-865 2/3.
Can hardly wait to try it out,I know its not gonna be easy,in the words of my son..."I'm not real good at it,but I've been catching fish" at least thats what he told his Mom..

Thanks

I would reccomend TFO Temple Fork Outfitters, They are a great rod at a great price. I have much more expensive rods but like my TFO just as well. A buddy of mine has a White River combo from Bass Pro and he also likes it. Good Luck and have fun!
