Here's a discussion with a TPW fisheries biologist about crappie populations. There's been a couple other posts from biologists about fishing pressure and crappie populations. Bottom line, fishing pressure doesn't have that big effect. The strength of the spawn is much more important. People have been fishing spawning time since I was a kid and that was many many years ago.

Crappie are a short life fish, if my memory is correct 5-6 years at best. If no fish were taken by the fisherman, there would be an overpopulation situation within a very short period, Crappie are very prolific in there spawn. Daniel
