Went back a few days later and went upstream. Caught 24 in three hours. Then I had heart surgery. And today eight days after surgery, I decided to go fish Irwin Bridge. It was slower than I expected, but landed 21 nice fat females in a somewhat short time frame. My lower back was going out on me, so I packed it up and wenthome before the better late afternoon bite got started. But on a fun chart from 1 to 10, I had a 10. I'm just glad I've been able to fish a little this year. And if everything health mwise stays on track, I plan to have several more productive trips this year.

Awesome Catch, Awesome report flehan Thx 4 sharing, my friend cheers And glad 2 here your doing a little better walking rock partyon

I don't post much but thought I'd share. They are definitely there. A buddy and I were there yesterday; I limited out in a little over an hour and a half. He ended 6 shy of a limit. We got there about 8am and left about 2pm. The fish were hitting consistently - I was getting hit on about every other cast & there were two other guys fishing the same hole I was at. One was having the same result as me; the other was having to work harder. Then, around 9:45,or 10am things moved quickly from on fire to lock jaw. I had to work for the last couple of fish for my limit. The cool thing (besides the mess of fish) was it was a perfect example of "little things matter." In the hole I was in, both me and the guy getting consistent hits were both throwing white jig heads with white 3" curly tails. We also both quickly picked up on the pattern that casts within a few inches of the far side bank with super slow retrieves got bites. Casts to the middle, or too fast retrieve got nothing. I never got a hit more than 1/3 of the way from the far bank all day - not once! I didn't see the color, but the 3rd guy was not reaching the opposite bank (even after I shared the tip). He was catching, just not as consistently. I think he left with about 8 or 10 nice fish.

My buddy was in a different hole and had a harder time in the morning. He was throwing chartreuse jugs/curly tails. He had about 15 when I hit my limit. At some point in the morning, I gave him some of my jig heads and curly tails and that's when he started catching more consistently. When they shut down, we tried going from 1/8 oz to 1/16 oz, we tried several colors (silver/black, yellow, etc). Also tried moving, different retrieves, etc. No love. Then around 1pm, my buddy texted saying they were hitting chartreuse. I put one on and got hit 3 of the next 4 casts. He could have closed out with a limit too, but we had plenty so he decided to only keep fish over 13". We threw back about 15 in the 10 to 12-1/2" range. Then, around 1:30 all we could catch was 8-10" so that's when we left. I did catch one hybrid striper but it was only 14" so it went back in the creek.

I know every day and every hole is different, but I thought I'd share this because it was such a good example of how figuring out the pattern makes a huge difference. Hope it helps someone. [Linked Image]

Great report, rficalora! Lots of good information in there. I gave up on changing lure colors. I used to do it, but it never seemed to make a difference for me. I'm convinced that's it way more about location and presentation, so those are the things I usually focus on. From reading your report, it definitely sounds like color was making a difference on your catch rate. Curious to hear from other fisherman, do you switch baits/colors when you're not catching. I always just move to another spot.

I used to switch colors as well when I first started at Newmans. Now I do like you and just change presentation and keep moving if they don't bite.

I do the same. Only use one color combination and vary the retrieve and also try to be consistent with letting lure drop in the water column by counting seconds so when they do hit I can repeat the same thing over and over. Has worked pretty good most of the time.

That would be cool. Do you ever fish the white bass run at Colorado Bend? From Liberty Hill it would probably be about the same distance as the Yegua. I miss Colorado Bend. Haven't fished there in a long time. Assuming water is probably too low this year.

Are you heading out there this weekend, JonL?

Never been to Colorado Bend. Recently moved here from Houston so I don't know any 'local' spots.

What I've learned this run is that there are thousands if not tens of thousands of fish in the Yegua and if I just slow down and work most any deep hole or undercut bank I can catch way more fish quicker than jumping from spot to spot..

Thursday afternoon really cemented that theory when I had the creek above the bridge to myself and took the time to really work the areas that should hold fish...

It didn't matter as much "what" I was tossing to the fish but more about the slow and deliberate drift into the strike zone where the fly would suspend or sink very slowly..

The dead drift presentation must have looked more like what they are seeing down there "suspending" because if or when I began to retrieve (strip) the fly I had very few takers.
Most of the time I'd see the line move or I feel the weight of a fish.. Very few fish I've caught "on the fly" so far this run have attacked the fly or even hit it on the run.

My guess would be that during the daylight hours the fish are hugging the bottom in deeper pools near the stronger currents in the slack water between more active spawning runs.

I know that most of the spawning I've seen has been in the early morning hours and often subsides during the day. The fish drop back into the slack water where if you can find them you can catch a bunch in short order before they make another spawning run.. Thursday late afternoon below the bridge I found just such a place.. a deep slack water hole where the bass were right under foot not six feet from me. I had to get low and back up to present the fly to them correctly and get my shadow off the water I was fishing...

I repeated the same dead drift several times resulting in 8 hefty females in about 20 minutes while two guys downstream and one upstream picked up two with conventional gear and losing several lures in the process.

I'm not bragging but that was almost as good as my buddy J-Moe which is who I've been watching very closely....

Cool. PM me if you want. I can point you to a few spots in Northwest Austin.
