Pirahna's are shy.... watch more of Channel 13 about when the animals cross rivers... LOL!! go to see a small water buffalo eaten alive in a matter of minutes by a school of "socially acceptable" pirahnas.. LOL!!! I am sure when there's nothing else to eat, they become ravenous feeders and will eat anything they can to survive.

Pacus are supposed to be herbivores in the wild, but I've had about ten of them over the years and every one I've had in a tank resort to eating whatever you put in there up to and including live fish.

I'm sure there are times when they would eat an animal crossing the river. I think Water Buffalo are in Africa btw.

I think they only go crazy when they sense something is injured. Many times I have stuck my hand in a school of Piranhas only to watch them scatter away like Goldfish. I have helped push a boat right through hundreds of them. Now if you had a bloody wound or some type of injury it might be a different story. I think Piranha are docile 99% of the time. Think about all those Dolphins and Peacock Bass hunting them down all the time. They would have to constantly be hiding. They are very low on the food chain.

I took these photos in Manaus two years ago when I was up in the Amazon region on business. It was at a restaurant. Piranah is good eating as well and makes a nice stew/soup.

Some one caught some of them paccus in Lake worth a few yerars ago.

If you look at the lake record for Lake worth. the record is like 5 pounds i think. At the old marina there where pictures of them from lake Worth. They where all about the 5 pounds range.

Piranahs really aren't that scary. Remember that movie "Piranah?" I think it gave people the wrong impression, If you've ever seen a piranah feeding it's rather disappointing. I've seen white bass and redfish put on more of a show when schooling. Anyway, back to that lousy movie. It was filmed at Aquarena Springs (closed, now the Texas State University Aquaculture lab) on the San Marcos River. They smeared molasses all over the people shown in the film and this certain type of fish (I forget the name) would swarm them, going after the molasses, but not inflicting any harm. Now you know. Welcome to my world of useless knowledge.

I'll second that. They used to have a glass bottom boat tour of the spring. It was some type of perch. The guy had blood packets taped all over his body and then they coated him in molasses. When the fish swarmed, he started beating himself to bust open all the blood packets. cheers
