I have been fishing Lake Somerville for a few weeks lately and it has been terrible. After the drought this lake was great. Now this lake is worse than terrible. It got me to thinking about how TPWD could make a lake better. The general thought is that stocking is what improves a lake. However, if you put a lot of fingerling in a lake with no cover the fingerling would only get eaten by other fish like whites and stripers. Would it make a bigger difference in these lakes with a lack of cover to plant vegetation instead of stocking? I bet if TPWD would increase native vegetation in lakes they wouldn’t need to re-stock the lakes. Am I wrong in my thinking?

Not sure the past few weeks is a good reflection of how any lake is fishing right now….unless you’re livescoping at Ivie or something lol.

I agree with Fishinfellow, give it some time. Fisheries Management always helps, it would be nice to add some cover any time. I live almost on Cooper and that is the problem with this lake. It drops at a rate when there is no rain that it pulls away from in cover that develops and would hold and support bass. They put 250k fingerlings in it about two years ago and I have already tried to fish for them this winter but everywhere I think they'd be the lake is just too shallow to navigate. It's supposed to rain a lot next week and hopefully it will catch some water and will get back to pool stage pretty quick, Then it's on!

I fish Somerville too. It was really good as recently as last summer. They’re still there.

Look at Purtis Creek and Cypress Springs as examples of vegetation going away

Correct me if I am wrong, but I have never heard of TPWD "increasing native vegetation." The only thing I have seen TPWD do is "manage" vegetation which means they eradicate all vegetation. JMO.

They have. Their website is horribly out of date when it comes to the stocking programs. Been like that for as long as I can remember.
